BRUCE WALKER: THE WAGES OF APPEASEMENT
The world has known for many years that the wages of appeasement are the loss of moral high ground to monstrous villains. During the Cold War, although America usually kept its military power adequate to deter Soviet aggression, the American Left (and European Left) blithely pretended that a regime which conspired with Adolph Hitler to start the Second World War, which instructed the Nazis about how to create massive camps in which millions of souls could perish – as millions had before the Nazis even came to power in Germany – and which preached as doctrine that any lie, any crime, any vice which advanced the cause of communism was morally on the same plane as America and the West.
I believe that these gutless wonders, if the Second World War had ended in a draw (as it might well have done) and if America faced a Nazi superpower in the 1970s and 1980s, would have found a way to accommodate and accept the evil of Nazism. Hitler’s murdered millions would have long been dead, and the world would have never seen film of the horrors of Auschwitz or read the Diary of Anne Frank. In some respects, a Nazi Germany in 1980 could, arguably, have had advantages over America. No race riots in the streets, for example. No genetically transmittable diseases in Germany either. And oodles of German high self-esteem.
That is what happens when people turn a blind eye to pure evil. That is what is happening with the Obama approach to global evil today. When twenty years ago, 259 innocent people were slaughtered at Lockerbie, Scotland and when the sophisticates of the West seek to “understand” radical Islam, then we pay the wages of moral appeasement. It is as if an SS officer imprisoned in Canada for his role in the Holocaust was returned to a joyful German people. How could that have happened? If there had never been de-Nazification of Germany.
After Ronald Reagan won the Cold War, one of the greatest moral crimes of his next two successors is that they failed, utterly, to push strongly for a de-Sovietization of Russia. Private citizens in America, in Russia, and in Europe worked through opened archives to expose the almost unfathomable evils of Soviet Communism (as one example, the execrable Laventi Beria, the worst head of Stalin’s secret police organs and heir after Stalin’s death, was removed and executed by Khrushchev, Malenkov, Molotov and others because Beria wanted to end the war against the West and the pandemic savagery and terrorism which was Soviet life.) As bad as we thought Communism was in the 1950s to 1980s, it was actually much worse.
Yet today there is a resurgence of the Cheka, the Nomenclatura, the often genocidal Great Russian chauvinism, and the grim thuggery which has ever been the soul of communism in power. Sure, Putin is no longer a Marxist – no Soviet official ever really believed in the banal poppycock of the nasty German theorist – but that power lust which was Lenin, Stalin, Brezhnev, and the last overlords of the Kremlin in 1991 is back.
The people of Iran are being dragged back into their prison cell of their nation. George W. Bush quite correctly identified the mullahs as part of an “Axis of Evil.” But Obama and other acolytes of Alinksy know that those who are good are really bad and that those who are bad – like Ahmadinejad and the mullahs – are really good. So while storm troopers shoot girls in the streets of Teheran, our vogue president realizes that their evil must mask some goodness and that the resolution of President Bush in at least denouncing the mullahs as evil must conceal Bush’s own sins.
So, the wages of appeasement are paid in full measure. Cheering crowds in Tripoli greet a mass murderer in part because Obama, and his cohorts in other Western nations, cannot bring themselves to condone the manifestly evil nature of radical Islam as evil. The re-enslavement of Iran proceeds with the mildest protest by Washington because Obama cannot abide the persecution of moral monsters. A former Chekist, currently wearing the hat of “Prime Minister” instead of “President “of Russia slowly strangles liberty to death and sells weapons to our “friends” like Hugo Chavez.
When Ronald Reagan called the Soviet Empire an “Evil Empire,” he was, of course, right. Archival sources now show that he was much more right that even Reagan could have known at the time. And calling evil “evil” has long term consequences, as Churchill showed Britain when he opposed, first, Bolshevism and then, with even greater passion, Nazism.
The wages of moral courage are ultimate victory over all the ghastly regimes of horror which lurk the dark hallways of history. The wages of moral appeasement have never been less than brutal and preventable wars, mass exterminations of whole peoples, and the elevation of men like Hitler, Kaddafi, Stalin, and Ahmadinejad to the standard of decent, well intentioned people. We are paying the price, right now, “from the Halls of Iran’s Mullahs to the Shores of Tripoli.” The price will grow greater and greater with each betrayal of moral truth.
