DENNIS M. PATRICK: RANDOM THOUGHTS AND STRAY VOLTAGE

In recapping the news, some items you’ll have heard of, some you haven’t and some you couldn’t care less about. News you can use or news you can lose. Take your pick. But, recapping news items helps cement them in the old brain cells long enough to recall them when needed. Don’t rely on the dominant media for help. They may not cover a newsworthy story in the first place.

It’s back. The Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST) is a United Nations “law” that would tax US-based interests. This is the same treaty that President Ronald Reagan refused to sign many years ago. Today, some in the US Senate, Democrats in particular, want to say “yes” to this international tax. We know all about the unsustainable debt our government incurred and the recurring effort to raise the debt ceiling again and again in order to spend even more money. With our economy going south fast, some Senate nitwits nevertheless want to redistribute American wealth internationally. Give me a break.

Here is another story. It illustrates why I am no longer a consumer of ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR, CNN and others of the dominant media. When networks spike stories that are otherwise newsworthy because they don’t comply with the network news template, it’s time to look for alternative news sources. On May 21, 43 Catholic dioceses and organizations sued the Obama administration for its narrow definition of “religious institution” under Obamacare. This suit is a religious liberty issue at heart. The federal government is radically tampering with the internal definition of what constitutes a church. The magnitude of this suit is astounding. Yet, ABC and NBC ignored the story completely and CBS gave less than 20 seconds on “CBS Evening News.” This is classic bias by omission, a variation of yellow journalism. Networks made their decision deliberately to protect Obama’s re-election bid. News morphs into propaganda.

Anyone paying attention to Scott Walker in Wisconsin? Who is Scott Walker? He’s the Republican Governor facing a recall election on June 5. Why? He’s too tough on unions and Wisconsin has become ground zero for limited government activists. Still, under his leadership no teachers have lost their jobs, employment is up and government spending is down -- and the Democrats are losing ground. If Walker wins, it might turn Wisconsin for Mitt Romney.

How ‘bout the phony “war on women” the Obama campaign trumped up as a diversion from a multitude of policy failures -- including Obamacare and contraception? The diversion is not working. The only war on women being waged is by Democrats against folks like Republican Governors Sarah Palin and Nikki Haley and Nebraska Republican State Senator Deb Fischer who just clinched the nomination to run for the US Senate.

Bill Clinton is in the news again. Last week at a fund raiser for the Clinton Foundation in Monte Carlo, Monaco, he had his picture taken with porn stars Brooklyn Lee and Tasha Reign as reported by ABC News and TMZ. Now here is one Democrat who is not conducting a war on women.

Obama was quite a pot head in his day. He admits as much in his book “Dreams of My Father.” But more specifics come to light with each new biography. Many young people in my generation used pot -- and a lot more. So, now we’re baby boomers continuing to exercise our right to vote. Would a campaign slogan such as “Pot Head for President” attract votes? Maybe. I know. I know. For that bit of stray voltage leftists will call me an intolerant racist, whatever that is. But let’s face it, Clinton still holds the moral high ground. At least he claims he didn’t inhale.

Try this. With all the other campaign woes Obama faces, he must now confront “white flight” as identified in a recent Wall Street Journal article by James Taranto. More and more white working class voters are abandoning Obama in his re-election bid. Consequently, he is not counting on their vote in November. Why? Because they are racists? Maybe the real reason is that the ones he calls “bitter clingers” ( those hanging on to guns and Bibles) have been hurt the most by his policies.

Oh, well, the beat goes on. News you can’t use? Irrelevant news as entertainment?

Nonsense! Of course the news is relevant. Store the news in memory for recall later.

November’s coming!
