DENNIS PATRICK: JIHADISTS AND THE QURANIC TEXT

Some important Quranic verses help explain the motivation and behavior of jihadists and other Islamists. These verses are not isolated or parsed.

Congratulations to David Woods, a courageous and powerful truth teller, and his website AnsweringMuslims.com for his work in rendering in context the verses of the Quran to non-Muslims. Also of help is the Quranic Arabic Corpus (corpus.quran.com/translation.jsp), an annotated linguistic resource for the Quran. It offers seven parallel translations in English showing the morphology of verses.

What follows is a discussion about a book and what it teaches. Citing chapter and verse challenges the claim that Islam is a “religion of peace” as purported.

3:32 “Say, ‘Obey Allah and the Messenger; but if they turn back, then surely Allah does not love the unbelievers’”

People need to obey Allah and Muhammad. If they do not, Allah and Muhammad have no love for them. If Allah has no love for unbelievers, then why should a Muslim?

48:29 “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard against disbelievers and merciful among themselves.”

This is the consequence of Allah not loving the unbelievers. Muslims are commanded to be merciful only toward fellow Muslims and not toward unbelievers. If a Muslim is treating everyone equally, he is not obeying the Quran.

4:24 “Also forbidden are women already married except those captives and slaves whom your right hand possesses. Thus Allah has ordained for you.”

This comes directly from Allah. Muslims are free to have sex with their unmarried female captives and slaves and to sell them at will.

5:33 “The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his Messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and     their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned.”

This verse obviously comes after verse 5:32 which is probably the most commonly misquoted verse in the Quran. This misquoted verse is intended to show that Islam is a religion of peace. However,

5:32 is actually lifted from the Jewish Talmud. Then follows verse 5:33, the command given to Muslims. Loosely interpreted it is easy to identify anyone “making mischief in the land.” These                       penalties apply both to Muslims and non-Muslims. Un-Islamic Muslims must die.

9:5 “When the sacred months are over, slay the pagans wherever you find them. Capture, besiege and ambush them. If they repent, perform prayers and pay the religion tax, set them free.”

This is known as the verse of the sword. After Muhammad conquered Mecca he received the command that once the “sacred months” had passed he was to kill the idolaters, pagans and polytheists. The time for tolerance was over. After that, convert or die.

9:29 “Fight against those People of the Book (Jews and Christians) who have no faith in Allah or the Day of Judgment, who do not consider unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have                           made unlawful, and who do not believe in the true religion (Islam) until they humbly pay tax (Jisyah).”

This is the exception for the “People of the Book.” This verse has nothing to do with those who attack Muslims, but rather those who do not believe in Allah. Every condition for fighting “People of the Book” has to do with beliefs and practices. If they do not believe in Allah, if they don’t believe in the judgment day, if they don’t believe in dietary restrictions, Muslims are to fight them until they pay Jisyah (tribute). The choice is to convert to Islam, submit to Islam and pay the Jisyah or die.

9:73 “O Prophet, fight against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be harsh with them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.”

This verse is directed not only to the unbelievers, but Muslim hypocrites as well. Muhammad and his followers are commanded to wage jihad against these people.

9:111 “Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their property in exchange for Paradise. They fight in Allah’s way, so they slay and are slain, a promise which is binding on Him in                           the Tora, the Gospel and the Quran.”

Here Allah defines “fighting.” Allah commands to keep killing until you are killed.

47:35 “So be not weak and ask for peace (from the enemies of Islam), while you are having the upper hand. Allah is with you, and will never decrease the reward of your good deeds.”

At times Muslims will have the resources and soldiers to subjugate unbelievers. That is the time they are commanded to subjugate the unbelievers. They are commanded not to seek peace. If a Muslim does not fight when conditions are right, they are considered a hypocrite.

2:106 “Whatever Verse (revelation) We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring a better one or similar to it. Know you not that Allah is able to do all things?”

In effect, Allah says, “I am changing the revelation as I go along.” Earlier revelations are cancelled by later revelations. There is no option other than obedience. If there is a peaceful verse early in the Quran, it is abrogated by the later verses. What is a good Muslim to do when commanded by Allah to fight unbelievers?
