DENNIS PATRICK: LAUGHING AT THE LEFT
Liberals have little sense of humor when it comes to their pet issues. They simply cannot and will not tolerate any criticism. Liberals typically go berserk when anyone mocks, ridicules, or satirizes their cherished ideological treasures. Their gems range from climate change to animal rights to equal opportunity to government giveaways and much more.
That said, the Left should know better than anyone else the effects of ridicule and satire. One of their own codified ridicule. Saul Alinksy's Rules for Radicals encouraged the use of ridicule against one's enemies. Rule #5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.” For my discussion, however, “ridicule” might be too strong. Try synonyms such as parody, mock, or make fun of.
That’s where the Babylon Bee comes in. The Babylon Bee serves as a conservative Christian news satire website that publishes articles on topics including politics, current events, and public figures. It has been referred to as an evangelical or conservative version of The Onion (https://www.theonion.com/).
Rush Limbaugh once illustrated the Left’s absolute lack of sense of humor on his June 2, 2016 show. “The Left does not understand when you are joking about them... They don’t understand when you are mocking them. They just get livid. I am trending on Facebook because I asked the question, ‘Hey, folks, can somebody tell me why Harambe the gorilla is still a gorilla?’… I am poking fun at their silly evolution beliefs.”
In 2017, Hurricane Harvey battered Houston, Texas, causing widespread flooding. In that context, The Babylon Bee satirically criticized televangelist Joel Osteen with a headline that read: "Joel Osteen Sails Luxury Yacht through Flooded Houston to Pass out Copies of ‘Your Best Life Now’". The article went viral prompting a fact check from Snopes
When the leftwing Snopes (for dopes) begins fact checking Babylon Bee stories as if they were intended as real news items – well, that validates the case that liberals have no sense of humor. Worse still, they don’t know they are being played! But they should. The Babylon Bee’s moniker says it all. “Fake news you can trust.”
For grins, here are other stories gleaned from the Babylon Bee.
03/23/2021. “Air Force One Now Equipped With Handicap Parking Pass.
CAMP SPRINGS, MD. As Air Force One returned to Andrew’s Air Force Base Sunday, observers noted a small blue handicapped parking pass displayed in the window of the cockpit. White House press secretary Jen Psaki was asked if the new parking permit had anything to do with the President’s recent fall on the stairs of Air Force One.
‘Absolutely not,’ Psaki said. ‘The President slipped because he was hit with a hurricane-force wind burst caused by global warming.’”
03/15/2022. “The Babylon Bee's Man Of The Year Is Rachel Levine.
The Babylon Bee has selected Rachel Levine as its first annual Man of the Year. Levine is the U.S. assistant secretary for health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he serves proudly as the first man in that position to dress like a…woman….Rachel's original name is Richard Levine, but he changed it to Rachel for some strange reason a few years ago.” This story got Babylon Bee banned from Twitter.
Check this final example. 07/13/2023. “AI Czar Harris Announces She Has Figured Out What AI Stands For.
WASHINGTON, D.C. In a speech given this week, Vice President and Artificial Intelligence Czar Kamala Harris proudly announced that after months of dedicated research and extensive study, she has determined what the initials AI stand for. ‘This discovery is the result of intense research,’ Harris said to the media. ‘It is with great pride that I am here to let the world know that the letters AI actually stand for Artificial Intelligence. At no point in the history of AI has this secret been known. I have gained this knowledge and now know this knowledge. Because after you gain knowledge, you then know it. This is how knowledge works. HA HA HA HA HA HA HE HE HE HE HA HA!’"
Finally, fact becomes stranger than fiction. Check out this story from TIME Magazine on 12/28/2022. “The White Supremacist Origins of Exercise, and 6 Other Surprising Facts about the History of U.S. Physical Fitness.” This was not a Babylon Bee story. It was for real. You can’t make this stuff up. Anyone wonder why the Left is laughed at and mocked? They bring it on themselves with this kind of silliness. Babylon Bee will never run short of grist for its mill.
