DENNIS PATRICK: ROMNEY V. OBAMA - DON’T LOSE HEART

Political struggles are called “campaigns” for a reason. The struggles are fights with their own set of tactics and stratagems. In the case of the 2012 elections, President Obama represents the Democrats, liberals and progressives. Mitt Romney leads the Republicans and conservatives. Tellingly, how they pursue their campaigns reflects what they think of their constituents.

Beware the daily polling results. Take them with a large grain of salt, especially polls conducted by news organizations. Push polling is a type of survey that asks leading questions to generate the desired results. The results are then reported as news.

Don’t lose heart.

The Obama campaign has no accomplishments which it can tout. Military accomplishments? Diplomatic coups? Economic gains? Job growth? Debt or deficit reduction? Unifying America? Transparency? He has offered nothing, except wealth redistribution, for which people can say, “I want more of that.”

Because Obama cannot run on his record, he must resort to attacking his opponent scurrilously, nastily and dishonestly and by demagoguing the issues. Here Obama can capitalize on negative campaigning because it works. No matter how many people complain about it or reject it, negative campaigning is extremely effective.

Don’t lose heart.

Because negative campaigning is so effective, Obama employs this tactic to avoid talking about his record. There is no adult conversation on vital issues, only adolescent attack ads from the Democrat super PACs. America approaches a fiscal catastrophe and Obama can only focus on his re-election through attacks and misrepresentations. No solutions, no budget, (Harry Reid and Kent Conrad where are you?). Just trashy attack ads.

Routine buzz words and catch phrases characterize negative ads. Phrases such as “extremist,” “tax the rich,” “tax breaks for the wealthy,” “eliminate Medicare,” “push grandma over the cliff,” “starve the children,” “steal from the poor” are routine. Add to these some dramatic music and images and you have propaganda that would make Joseph Goebbels salivate. You’ll remember that Nazi. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it....It becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

Don’t lose heart.

Evidently, Obama’s re-election strategy has two thrusts. The first is to shore up his Democrat base and get them to the polls in November. The other is to suppress the Republican vote.

Repressing the opposition is subtle. Obama knows he has lost many white, middle-class voters and has written them off. Now he must keep them from voting for Romney. Thomas Edsall discussed this in his November 27, 2011 New York Times column.

Edsall’s second New York Times piece on July 23, 2012 goes on to say how Obama will suppress the votes of his opposition including veterans, active duty military, rural Americans, seniors and small business owners -- all who, to one degree or another, reject Obama.

Don’t lose heart.

How could Obama possibly suppress opposition votes? His lawyers could challenge the rules regulating the overseas military vote. News about armies of lawyers prepared to challenge voting results could discourage Obama’s opposition. Black Panthers could intimidate voters at polling places as happened during the 2008 election in Philadelphia. Voter intimidation by union thugs such as the SEIU is a tactic as old as the hills.

Don’t lose heart.

Obama’s campaign will do anything to discourage opposition voters. Obama must find a way to make sure opponents don’t want to vote. He must demoralize them. He must make their vote appear hopeless, make them want to give up. In a word, Obama must poison the vote for Romney.

To do this, the Obama campaign must convince people that Romney hates them. Obama is still counting on class warfare to work its magic. Here is where advertising propaganda prevails. Many of Obama’s TV ads intend to suppress voter turn-out by portraying Romney as hurtful to the middle-class. Convincing the opposition that Romney sneers at them, that he resents them, that he is in politics for personal gain, that he loves closing plants forcing people to lose health care and die. Obama must convince the opposition they are already defeated and have no chance. They might as well not even show up at the polls.

Don’t lose heart.

Whatever you do, don’t stay at home on November 6. Take someone with you to vote. There is a vast, silent majority waiting to oust the Obama regime.
