DENNIS PATRICK: WHO IS PAM BONDI?
Pamela Jo Bondi, an American attorney, served as the 37th Florida Attorney General and now serves as the 87th United States Attorney General. Born November 17, 1965 in Tampa, Florida, she grew up in Temple Terrace, Florida. Bondi received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in criminal justice from the University of Florida in 1987 and a Juris Doctor from the Stetson University College of Law in 1990. She was not always a Republican. Like President Trump, she affiliated with the Democrat Party. In 2000 she switched parties to become a Republican.
Pam Bondi appears to be a tough Attorney General. A timeline of her initial actions speaks volumes. Bondi was sworn in on February 5, 2025. Immediately after her swearing in, Bondi issued a directive to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities. Reason? By state law, local law enforcement was intentionally restricted from cooperating with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Hours later, on February 6, Bondi sued the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago arguing that their sanctuary laws interfere with the Trump administration's immigration enforcement policies.
According to the DOJ lawsuit against Illinois governor J. B. Pritzker and Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson, multiple state and local laws are "designed to and in fact interfere with and discriminate against the Federal Government's enforcement of federal immigration law in violation of the Supremacy Clause of the United States Constitution."
"Instead of handing over people who are in prison or in jail to federal immigration authorities they will just let folks go." Bondi said that "for too long, leaders in Illinois and Chicago have abused their power by putting the comfort of illegal aliens over the safety and welfare of their own citizens." Bondi continued, "This ends today…the Department of Justice will no longer stand by as state and local leaders obstruct federal law enforcement efforts and endanger their citizens and the brave men and women in uniform."
As if on cue, Bondi announced Wednesday, February 12, that the Justice Department will sue New York officials for their efforts to shield illegal immigrants. This civil lawsuit was filed against Governor Kathy Hochul, State Attorney General Letitia James, and Mark Schroeder, the head of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. It alleges that the New York state law is unconstitutional and infringes upon the federal government’s ability to curb illegal immigration. It specifically focuses on the state’s Driver’s License Access and Privacy Act, otherwise referred to as the “Green Light Law.” As permitted, New Yorkers may apply for a driver’s license regardless of legal status. “New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops. It stops today,” Bondi said.
The 16-page lawsuit, filed in federal court in Albany, contends that New York obstructs the federal government from addressing illegal immigration. New York law violates the Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, which states that federal law preempts state law. By initiating this suit, Bondi reiterated that the goal of her department was to single out cities and states for their immigration policies. “We sued Illinois, and New York didn’t listen. So now you’re next,” she said.
Americans can expect the following from President Trump’s new Attorney General.
1) Bondi understands her foremost task as Attorney General will be restoring public trust in the Department of Justice. During the Senate confirmation hearings, she pointed out a stark reality: “72 percent of Americans have lost faith in the Department of Justice.” Under the Biden administration, the DOJ spied on pro-lifers and branded as domestic terrorists concerned parents who spoke out at school board meetings. It conducted a nation-wide manhunt in the aftermath of January 6 targeting peaceful protesters. Americans can expect a swift end to political persecutions and renewed focus on real crimes like human trafficking, gang activity, and the drug trade.
2) Bondi must de-politicize the DOJ. She understands that the Biden DOJ perpetuated political agendas through countless smaller actions to conceal Biden’s larger political failures. As Biden’s spending drove inflation higher, the DOJ created convenient scapegoats. Instead of acknowledging that Biden spent trillions of dollars on unnecessary COVID relief and green energy handouts, the DOJ shifted blame to greedy grocery stores, Visa’s large share of the debit card market, and landlords’ “price-gouge” their renters.
3) Bondi will level the partisan playing field. The “progressive” left has only one strategy when they’re losing, i.e., accuse the other side of the wrongs they themselves commit daily. Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson aptly described this tactic in a recent speech. Most children would feel guilty if you caught them in the cookie jar. They might lie about it. However, a child from the “progressive” left “would stare right in your eyes, smile, and say, I didn’t eat any cookies. You did.”
We heard accusations that Bondi would prosecute anti-Trump politicians like Liz Cheney, as if Biden didn’t spend four years prosecuting Trump. We heard claims Bondi would facilitate Trump’s abuse of presidential pardon powers, as if Biden didn’t just pardon his own son and commute the sentence of a child raping serial killer.
So far, Bondi appears to be doing what Americans expect a good Attorney General to do.
