DENNIS PATRICK: WORDS BEST LEFT UNSPOKEN

There are instances when the mouth gets ahead of the brain. At those times one wishes to take back words uttered. Some people, however, don’t even recognize their gaffs. Others mean what they say speaking forthrightly from shallow intellects. Consider the following.

Commenting in an interview with Roll Call magazine, on Hillary Clinton’s run for the White House, Nancy Pelosi is quoted as saying, “When she runs, she will win. And when she wins, she’ll go to the White House as one of the most prepared people in modern history to go there.” Indeed, as a deceitful, lying politician she will climb head and shoulders above everyone else.

Citing Dear Leader’s utterance as reported in that journal of intellectual excellence, USA Today, Obama said, “I even tweeted my 31 million followers on Twitter. Just bragging a little bit. I don’t think that’s quite as much as Lady Gaga, but it’s pretty good.”

“I think the Good Book says, you know, ‘Don’t throw stones in glass houses’….” This was quoted in the Washington Post. It fits. Any president who rules by executive order should darn well be able to make up his own Bible verses!

The following dumb quotes are based on a story written by Sabrina Erdely and carried in the December 2014 issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Erdely wrote about an alleged fraternity gang rape at the University of Virginia that was very quickly discredited. She made up the story. Consequently, the fraternity and the university are suing Rolling Stone, the editor and Erdely for defamation, damage to reputation and emotional distress. Nevertheless, here are quotes foolishly uttered by “responsible” lefties.

“To let fact-checking define the narrative would be a huge mistake.” – Julia Horowitz, UVA student newspaper editor, comment to Politico, 12/6/14.

“Jackie’s story [alleged rape victim] might not be real, but a bigger one is. One in five women say they have been raped.” -- Yvonne Abraham, The Boston Globe 12/7/14. (DOJ figures record one in 500 women claim to have been raped on campuses nation-wide.)

“…I still don’t really care if what’s presented in this [Rolling Stone] article is true or not because I think it’s far more important that people focus on the issue of sexual assault as a whole.” – Ryan Duffin, friend of “Jackie”, carried by Associated Press 12/15/14.

Liberals and progressives never miss an opportunity to put down America and the American Dream.

Gawker shouted this headline on 12/12/14. “The American Suckers Still Believe in the American Dream.” This reminds me of MIT professor Jonathan Gruber’s comment about the “stupidity of the American voter” he claims helped pass Obamacare.

If one needs evidence of the foolishness of these remarks, check out the increased migration of illegal aliens into our country. It gives lie to the disparaging remarks made by liberals and progressives that the American Dream is dead.

Come to think of it, this topic of the American Dream and its detractors is worth addressing in a separate piece. Something to consider. So it goes. There is much credence in the old maxim “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

On a lighter side, there are some quotes gleaned from the public square that make a lot of sense. Thomas Sowell, Ph.D. (economics) with the Hoover Institute recently published his fifth edition of “Basic Economics.” Some of his quips qualify as both truth and wry humor.

For example, “People are astonished that Obama has someone as slimy as Al Sharpton as his White House advisor. But how in the world is Al Sharpton any different from Jeremiah Wright?”

And again, “I have never believed that Obama was out to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. I believe he was out to stop Israel from stopping Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.”

Well said, Dr. Sowell.
