We recently explained how Sen. Kent Conrad has decided that repealing the Bush tax cuts now would not be a good idea. We've also shown how Sen. Byron Dorgan is singing chorus to the class-warfare "Tax cuts for the rich"... blah, blah, blah.
Meanwhile, Rep. Earl Pomeroy sits silent and apparently undecided.
You still have the chance to sign our online petition insisting Pomeroy to extend the Bush tax cuts.
Don't forget to leave a comment for Pomeroy! Do both by clicking here.
On Sunday, the Bismarck Tribune echoed our concerns:
Conrad disagrees with the Obama Administration's quest to increase taxes.
Last week he said, "As a general rule, you don't want to be cutting spending or raising taxes in the midst of a downturn. We know that very soon we've got to pivot and focus on the deficit. But it probably is too soon to cut spending or raise taxes."
Memo to Senator Conrad: It's not too soon to cut spending.
From the Bismarck Tribune:
However, Sen. Byron Dorgan has announced his favor for the president's plan. Unless Conrad or Dorgan change positions, it will be a wash. Better for Dorgan to follow Conrad on this issue.
[...]
Only a strong economy can generate the tax revenues required to balance our intolerable national debt. Higher taxes prevent economic activity and will make that debt explode. Obviously, it's in the nation's best interest to extend the Bush cuts for all Americans.
The Tribune's editorial is spot on. If Dorgan continues obstructing efforts to grow the economy grow, his vote cancels Conrad's and leaves each vote void.
A new report by the non-partisan Tax Foundation added to merit of that point by confirming that if Washington fails to extend the tax cuts, "the average middle income family" would owe the Feds $1,500 more in taxes for 2011 alone.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist, economist, or populist senator to understand that increasing taxes during a recession does not make sense.
It's time for our delegation to stand up for North Dakotans.
