FRANK BLACK CLOUD: SIOUX FIGHTING FOR THE FIGHTING SIOUX
The blame needs to be put where it belongs, we have heard of a couple of incidents that were supposedly to have happened, after investigating only one incident that we’ve found to be true. And there is no proof of who did this it could even be coming from the opposition. Please understand if you want to vent, contact the SBHE or President Kelley they are responsible for the decision not the Sioux of North Dakota.
For those who are unclear about what has happened the N.C.A.A. well intended but mistakenly were trying to protect the Sioux of North Dakota, and demanded they drop the name and logo. A lawsuit resulted where the State of North Dakota opposed the N.C.A.A. ruling and an agreement was reached between the two parties North Dakota and the N.C.A.A. on October 2007. North Dakota was to get support from the Sioux of North Dakota and they had until November 30, 2010 to get this support. Once support was given by the Sioux of North Dakota the N.C.A.A. would accept the name and logo. Although the Sioux were not a part of that agreement in court, they were the center point. The SBoHE has the power to change the name and they wouldn’t have had to go to court if that is what they wished to do. The SBoHE has the power to change the name on December 1, 2010 but they would be then held responsible for the decision. From our point of view they want to be able to blame the Sioux of North Dakota. They will always be able to say the Sioux did not do what we required even though we weren’t any part of their agreement (and they also kept changing the requirements).
We the Sioux of North Dakota have already expressed overwhelming support for the name and logo.
Now as for our position on the name and logo the vast majority of Sioux in North Dakota take pride in the name and logo and feel it honors our ancestors. We understand that there are honorable people who oppose the name and they do respect the people, but there are those also who oppose the name, who do not respect our people. And as a Grand Forks Herald reporter said after speaking with an opponent he got the impression the “end justifies the means” that tactic, we feel dishonors our ancestors. The whole sordid truth will be revealed in a forth coming book that will show a total disrespect for the Sioux of North Dakota supporters and opponents alike and also for the Sioux fans throughout North Dakota and the World.
We have been in contact with our relatives at Standing Rock and will continue to work together with Standing Rock in exploring our options.
This controversy is far from being over, the Sioux having yet begun to fight. The only way to stop this controversy is for eight council members in Standing Rock to get out of the way and let the people speak. If by some amazing turn of events Standing Rock voted in opposition to the name and logo the people of Spirit Lake would accept it as long as it is open and honest.
