GARY EMINETH: IT’S A MATTER OF HEART
It’s all about how you vote on election day. Your vote makes a difference. Exercise your right to vote in the most consequential election in the short life of our country.
This sounds like me -- because it is me. I looked back on some old columns from past election cycles and sure enough the reason my kids and other family members say I sound like a broken record is because it probably RINGS TRUE.
Is this an important election? Yes. Will it matter who becomes President? Yes. Will it have consequences? Yes. But those things won’t be as important as some of the other things going on behind the scenes.
What am I talking about?
I’m talking about the inner things—things in the hearts and minds of Americans. The importance of which I see as way more of what will actually effect this country and the world around us than who is elected President.
Even the hardest line Democrat or the rightest wing Republican doesn’t believe the slogans or mantras printed on signs that they will be the pathway that outshines all others on the way to PEACE around the world and a boost to the economy. These are already too far gone for any executive order, a supreme court decision or an emergency legislation to bring lasting change.
It is not “A New Way Forward” or the old “MAGA Mantra” that will make America what she once was. Seems I always end up relying on my kids to set me straight and it happened again while I visited them this past week.
My oldest son reminded me that it is what takes place in the heart that matters. I immediately went to my wife, whom I refer to as my Bible concordance, to get me the address of the verse I needed to use today: “If my people who’ve been called by my name will humble themselves, turn from their wicked ways and pray and seek my face, I will forgive their sins and heal their land.” II Chronicles 7:14.
In this passage Solomon, the king of Israel, addressed the people of Israel at the pinnacle of their glory. But as history shows, they (like the people of America) forgot God and his law with judgement to follow. This verse which pointed to the way back, had nothing to do with the King.
The focus was all on what God would do if they would “turn their hearts back to Him in humility and repentance.” After all, it wasn’t the wisest king ever crowned and gifted to lead or the greatest revolutionary who ever called the people to unite, but God who could bless his people with peace and prosperity again.
No historical event or words from the oval office can change the human heart except the One who “knit it together in your mother’s womb.” Psalm 139:13b
Try calling on Him before you vote—that is the only way this election can even begin to make good on its promises.
