GARY EMINETH: WHAT IS TRUTH?

“What is truth?,” Pilate asked of Jesus. That question has haunted mankind for thousands of years. In this age of exponential knowledge, accelerating at a breakneck pace, it becomes difficult to discern what’s true and what is fake.

It seems in wake of this increase of knowledge coupled with the internet connecting people to so much information, we are approaching overload. We may already be there.

As a member of a society grappling with this haunting question, “What is truth?,” I ask, “What is your source of truth? Is it your parents', university's, the government, Google, Siri or could it be your own reasoning power?” Mine is the Bible, because it has a long-established track record of speaking to what is true of man and God’s interaction with mankind.

I find it interesting that what is currently happening in the Middle East has been going on for a few millennia. We find in the book of Joshua God carving out a piece of real estate for his people, Israel. In fact, the promise of this land goes back to Genesis when God called Abraham out of Ur and promised him land to possess. While there was wandering in the desert and a detour of 430 years in Egypt, the people under Moses’ leadership after 500 years arrived in the promised land.

The strife between Israel and the offspring of Ishmael (Abraham’s other son) will continue to the end of the age.

Fact.

And the Bible makes it clear that what is true matters more than what you choose to believe.

The Bible exposes many infractions by man against God. Jesus shows up on the scene 2,000 years after Abraham with a new message foretold by the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel. It involves the heart. He would take out their heart of stone and make it a heart of flesh. It was a new covenant because now the Holy Spirit lives in man.

God’s demand for obedience to the law never changed. The Ten Commandments were the basis of law in the new nation as the founders relied on it to draft the U.S. Constitution. The Holy Spirit gives his people supernatural help to follow the law.

I, for one, don’t feel I am up to the task of deciding what is truth outside of the Bible. It is inextricably connected with life as citizens in a free society. Laid out in a very straightforward way by John Adams, “The Constitution was written for a moral and religious people and is unfit to govern any other.” Otherwise, the law and principles it relies on become mere opinion with no foundation.

As we see the culture wars on social issues heat up in this next election cycle, voters must ask themselves what they believe and why they should support certain candidates. I would suggest that you dig deep into your soul and review what you believe. America is drifting away from our founder’s intent. Ask yourself who stands for your values. America’s future depends on you!
