LYNN BERGMAN: APPRECIATE CARBON DIOXIDE - THE PRIMARY SOURCE
Fossil Fuels
The burning of fossil fuels has increased the concentration of CO2 in earth’s atmosphere from 280 parts per million (ppm) pre-industrial revolution to currently around 422 ppm or 6.48 kilograms of gas per square meter of the total atmospheric column. The concentration was 421 ppm in May 2022.
Practical Uses of Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide is used commercially in enhanced oil recovery, food and beverage production, metal fabrication, cooling, fire suppression, and for stimulating plant growth in greenhouses. Increased plant growth (and the oxygen plants produce) due to increased carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has, to a degree, bailed us out of human deforestation of Earth’s rain forests.
The almost 300-year-old Beer-Bouguer-Lambert “Extinction” law
The CO2 concentration that absorbs 99.99 percent of radiant energy from the sun (called “absorption saturation” and called “extinction” by Beer-Bouguer-Lambert nearly 300 years ago) is 34.4 ppm or 0.528 kilograms of gas per square meter of the total atmospheric column. Carbon dioxide, at concentrations above 34.4 ppm, have no material effect on the amount of long-wavelength radiation (LWR) being absorbed and, in turn, on the amount of heat trapped.
W. A. van Wijngaarden and W. Happer
Wijngaarden is employed by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, York University, Toronto, Canada. Happer is employed by the Department of Physics, Princeton University, New Jersey, USA.
They published “Dependence of Earth’s Thermal Radiation on Five Most Abundant Greenhouse gases” on June 8, 2020, which corroborated the Beer-Bouguer-Lambert “Extinction” law. In the over four years since their publication, there has not been any known attempt to refute their theory, such as by identifying errors in the logic or mathematics of their theoretical formulation.
Jan Kubicki, Krzysztof Kopczynski, and Jaroslaw Mlynczak
This trio of Polish scientists published “Climatic consequences of the process of saturation of radiation absorption in gases” on April 15, 2024. The experiment’s results were consistent with van Wijngaarden and Happer’s theory. They confirmed that the saturation level for carbon dioxide with respect to LWR is not only lower than today’s level, lower than that of pre-industrial times, but also lower than even the minimum during the most recent Ice Age.

Is Reduced Global Cloud Cover the real culprit?
Ned Nikolov, a physical scientist, and researcher affiliated with Colorado State University, and Karl Zeller, a retired U.S. Forest Service meteorologist published a study on August 20, 2024 that finds that recent warming is not the result of increasing CO2. After analyzing satellite data, the two researchers postulate that the Earth has warmed because it has been absorbing more sunlight because of reduced cloud cover. NASA has, since year 2000, observed a decrease in the Earth’s albedo due to reduced global cloud cover.
The two researchers have called for large-scale interdisciplinary research into the physical mechanisms controlling the earth’s albedo (energy imbalance) and cloud physics, insisting that they are the real drivers of climate on multi-decadal time scales.
Definitions
Albedo:
Earth’s atmosphere is constantly working to balance Earth’s “Energy Budget” – the amount of shortwave radiation energy from the Sun entering Earth’s atmosphere versus the amount of longwave (infrared or thermal) radiation energy reflected back into space. Earth’s “albedo,” the fraction of sunlight reflected back into space, reduces the amount of radiation that reaches the surface of Earth.
Radiative Forcing:
An imbalance in the Earth’s “Energy Budget” is called “Radiative Forcing” or “Solar Forcing.” From about 1950 through 1980 there was evidence for a widespread decline (called “dimming”) of surface solar radiation (hence the “global cooling” warnings of the 1970s) followed thereafter by a partial recovery (called “brightening”) of surface solar radiation (hence the “global warming” warnings since 1980).
“Political Climate” Emergency?
Wijngaarden and Happer have endured smears in both social media and in legacy media as “climate skeptics” and “climate deniers.” Such smears potentially represent the triumph of politics over science, unless honest writers like myself spread the truth. Who are the real “conspiracy theorists”?
Commentary
Why do the “scientific community” around these scientists referenced herein seem to have blinders on, ignoring such consequential research? Why didn’t the Wijngaarden and Happer research come to the attention of politicians and higher education leaders who direct research funding? Or did they just ignore their research because it may take away a portion of their funding?
Are these researchers correct? If so, how many trillions of dollars have been wasted globally on climate studies, their politicization, the attempted global destruction of the fossil fuel industry, and associated CO2 sequestration? Will there be any accountability for the globalist Klause Schwab, his World Economic Forum, or the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) if these researchers are correct and Anthropogenic (caused by humans) Global Warming (AGW) is a myth?
As a civil engineer, I have experienced the tendency of otherwise intelligent humans to believe they can outsmart, overcome, or negate the power of natural forces. Humans tend to over-estimate the degree to which they can modify natural forces. The egos of humans have caused many to abandon a belief in something bigger than themselves, what we call “spirituality.” Should we instead pray for volcanic activity that may increase atmospheric particulates, thereby increasing cloud cover and mitigating warming? Should we, as a minimum, stop seeding clouds with silver iodidenanoparticles, causing clouds to empty themselves?
