LYNN BERGMAN: BOOK REVIEW OF TIMOTHY SNYDER’S - THE ROAD TO UNFREEDOM
A book Report by Lynn Bergman
This book was given to me by a friend who asked if I would read it and report back what I think. The book is copyrighted 2018.
Similarity in Title to a Classic
The title immediately struck me as being way too similar to the 1944 classic, “The Road to Serfdom” by F.A. Hayek. For those who have not read it, it is a timeless work on the relation between individual liberty and government authority. For Hayek, the collectivist idea of empowering government with increasing economic control would inevitably lead not to a “utopia” but to the horrors of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. When his book first came out, most of the “smart people” sneered… but the world was wrong and Hayek was right.
Friedrich August von Hayek was born May 8, 1899 in Vienna, Austria. He wrote “Road to Serfdom” from late 1940 to 1943 and was published in England in March 1944. Milton Friedman’s introduction to the fiftieth Anniversary Edition on April 14, 1994 concluded with the following paragraph.
“Since Hayek’s death in 1992 there has been increasing recognition of the influence that he exerted in both communist and noncommunist regimes. His publishers can confidently look forward to continuing sales of this remarkable book for as long as freedom of the press prevails – which, despite some erosion since he wrote, is nonetheless more secure than it would otherwise be precisely because of this book.”
Who is Timothy Snyder?
Snyder is the Levin professor of history at Yale University.
What is a Levin professor?
Richard Charles Levin, and American economist, was the President of Yale from 1993 to 2013. Although described in Who’s Who as a Democrat, he was one of the first guests of President George W. Bush in the White House and the president stayed at Levin’s house when he received an honorary degree from Yale in 2001. In March 2014, Levin became the CEO of Couresa, a global online course provider. We can be confident that Levin is a “globalist” from his biography and thus Timothy Snyder would be suspect of the same globalist worldview until his writing proves otherwise.
The book jacket states “The rise of populism, the British vote against the European Union (i.e. Brexit), and the election of Donald Trump were all Russian goals, but their achievement reveals the vulnerability of Western societies.” It claims that “By revealing the stark choices before us – between equality and oligarchy, individuality and totality, truth and falsehood -Snyder restores our understanding of the basis of our way of life, offering a way forward in a time of terrible uncertainty.”
What was Snyder up to when he wrote this book in 2018?
The dedication at the beginning of the book is “For the reporters, the heroes of our time.” They may be heroes to atheist Marxists indoctrinating our youth at institutions of higher education, but their almost universal pandering to the Democrat Party’s socialist goals makes them “propagandists” to Republicans, enlightened Independents, and enlightened Democrats.
Russia released the Steele dossier to the Clinton campaign in 2016 to discredit Trump… so the truth is that Russia favored a Clinton win… for obvious reasons.
The British vote to exit the European Union was in response to the heavy-handed approach of various edicts coming out of Brussels. The UK will have a brighter future because of Brexit.
I can only assume that “a time of terrible uncertainty” was the propped up 2020 choice between the “Republic” envisioned by the Founders and “Democracy” (Rule of the Majority).
Speakers who say “democracy is threatened” in the United States are confusing us with India, a pure democracy… where the minority has no recourse. We are a democratic republic, period.
Snyder, on page 5, refers to the inexpensive insurance that “covered everything” in an Austrian maternity ward. He said that such insurance was “unthinkable” in the US? The truth is that the United States’ private health care system is the envy of the world. Millions of foreigners use our private health care system each year with amazing results.
Snyder, on page 8, introduces the term “Eternity politicians”. On page 11, Snyder states that “Eternity politicians first spread fake new themselves, then claim that all news is fake, and finally that only their spectacles are real.” Snyder’s parents were married in a Quaker ceremony, so his preoccupation with “Eternity politicians” likely comes from the atheist Marxist influences he is immersed in. His children could likely tell you if he himself has ever shown any religious tendencies or virtues. My guess would be that he despises or at least looks down on Christians, Jews, Muslims, and others who believe in eternal life after death.
From reading the remainder of this book, it is obvious that Snyder believes that President Trump, Republicans, and most especially the “Eternalists” are responsible for all that is wrong in the United States and by association, the world. He carries the water for a Marxist future of America. He is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the influence that Marxists have achieved as they “march through the institutions.”
My suggestion would be to read “The Road to Serfdom” to fully realize the real threat to the world presented by Socialism and the Communists within. The Communist Manifesto itself identifies “democratic socialists” as “those we (the Communists) can work with.” Self-identified Democratic Socialists include many elected Democrats, including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, AOC, and numerous others. They do not keep their “Democratic Socialist” identity a secret. Listen up America! Globalism, atheism, socialism, and communism are on the rise. What is a Democratic Republic to do? Why Vote… of course!
