For a hundred years the party with the most elected members of the House of Representatives has met behind closed doors to “choose” the Speaker of the House. It has been the classic “smoke filled room”. In recent years, “Regular Order” (requiring public hearings, debate, consideration of amendments, and a recommendation to the House floor for voting by all 435 House members on each and every spending bill) has largely been scrapped in favor of a single all-encompassing “Omnibus” spending bill such as the $1.7 Trillion bill of the “lame duck” 117^th Congress recently signed by the President. The bill was prepared by “leadership” (in Russia they call them “oligarchs”) of both parties after consideration of spending requests (called “earmarks” before they were done in secret) of House members behind closed doors.

As we all know, the federal government prints money well in excess of that provided by taxpayers. Such printing is the root cause of inflation of the US dollar, despite efforts of politicians and members of the Federal Reserve to confuse your understanding of basic economics. An over supply of dollars printed to pay for government programs causes the dollar’s value to be reduced… what they call “inflation”. If you privately printed money, it is called counterfeiting and you would likely go to jail for doing it.

Intellect tells us that zero inflation would be the best target for a stable economy… but the Federal Reserve Bank thinks that 2% inflation per year is a good target. Why? Because politicians know that the money that is borrowed to fund expensive government programs can then be paid back with less valuable dollars. If this is all too much for you to understand, you really shouldn’t vote for candidates for federal public office, such as Representatives or Senators.

The Present

Today it was different. Members of the House Freedom Caucus and those that support them have been elected by their conservative constituents to force a return to “regular order”. They chose to begin by showing voters what “regular order” looks like. Today, 434 of 435 member of the House of Representatives met to select their “House Speaker” but it wasn’t a predetermined outcome. Nominating Speeches were delivered. A simple majority or 218 votes would have been required to win. 19 Republican members of congress voted against a “coronation” on the first two ballots. 20 voted against a coronation on the third ballot. This was too much “work” for them to perform on their first day in office so they adjourned with a single dissention at 5:30 eastern time. This means that all but one of these representatives were lying during their campaign if they promised to “work tirelessly for you”.

The Future

Conservative realize that when no legislation is passed, Americans are best off. They realize that government is not the solution but the problem.

Liberals, Progressives, Leftists, Socialists, Democratic Socialists , Independents, Moderates, RINOs, Democrats or whatever they choose to call themselves on any given day believe that government solves all problems by throwing printed money at them.

Tomorrow be sure to tune in to your television set to see how successful 20 members of congress will be in reforming our House of Representatives and how many of the others really wish to be re-elected in 2024… Will so-called Republicans continue to make nominating speeches and take votes to determine their Speaker of the House… or will it be a pre-determined “Coronation by aristocrats… what  we have come to call ”The Swamp”.
