LYNN BERGMAN: THE TROUBLE WITH UND HOCKEY

The Sioux name ascribed commonly to the self-named Dakota tribe represents an evolution from the Algonquinian word Nadowessiwag, meaning the “snakelike ones” or, in other words, the “enemies.” This Agonquinian term was erroneously transcribed by French explorer Jean Nicollet (1598 - 29 October 1642) in 1634-35 as Naduesiu, and again erroneously transcribed by Franciscan missionary Louis Hennepin (May 12, 1526 – 1701) in 1683 as Nadiousioux.

Two points, then, are to be made. First, any attempt to honor the tribe should reference its preferred name, Dakota, not necessarily the name that evolved from the name it was called by the Algonquins of Canada that references snakelike ones or enemies.

So, since as early as 1634, the name appropriate to honor the tribe and the state is Dakota, which, along with the geographic word North, is prominent on every hockey jersey in North Dakota hockey history. The verbal use of the Sioux name ascribed long ago by the Algonquins of Canada should not be interpreted as disrespectful toward the Dakota tribes in both North and South states. The use of the Hawks nickname should be obliterated from North Dakota athletics history as an attempt to erase our great plains heritage with meaningless trivia.

The cheerleaders for North Dakota Hockey have traditionally offered two hand-claps for each opposing player and approaching coaches announced prior to the playing of our national anthem(s). A few fans do the same. This is a good example of tradition that is worth continuing. “Seats for Soldiers” is another. Respect for our Canadian neighbors by respectfully standing at attention when their anthem is played is another.

There are, however, a few things that must be changed by responsible leadership regarding North Dakota Hockey. The expression “Who’s he? He Sucks Shit!” must never again be uttered at another UND athletic event. And the pathetic degrading condescension of opposing players by our announcer must end as well. Those who do not comply must never enter the arena again to spew their venom, including our ill-advised announcer (who told him that condescension of opposing players during the official player introductions is OK?). Lastly, the drinking games highlighted within 100 feet of the President’s box at last weekend’s games must end as well. An argument could easily be made that serving alcohol at our athletic events is not conducive to good sportsmanship or the safety and enjoyment of our fans. If drinking is to be allowed, it must occur within limits of decent behavior.

These corrections will take leadership and a stern determination by the UND President… as well as 100% support of our community. Or are the President’s only duties the acceptance of oversized checks, looking handsome, and promoting Marxist ideologies (DEI, CRT, etc) on campus? And is our community only a reflection of city leadership that had invited the Chinese Communist Party to destroy us from within (Fufeng)?
