SALLY MORRIS: WHAT WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT “FAST AND FURIOUS” AND WHAT WE DO KNOW ABOUT CONGRESS

Who cares what secrets the Justice Department is keeping from us? Who cares what we don’t know about Fast and Furious? What are we doing about what we DO know?

What do we know? We all know, first of all, what “Fast and Furious” is. It is a government-funded program where we supply drug kingpins and gangsters in Mexico with free guns so that they can maraud around the border killing our border agents and citizens and assorted innocent Mexicans. It was instituted as a ploy to teach us that “guns are dangerous” and that the United States must thus outlaw them. It is hard to imagine that a program founded on such a motive could get any more "out of hand” but so it seems to have done, bringing international attention to the American government gone rogue.

We can reasonably deduce this much: The lower-stationed ATF agents aren’t responsible for instituting this. They have protested, to no avail. If an underling had done this he would have been outed and punished as soon as it became widely known and criticized. So, then, someone “higher up” made this decision. How high? Well, high enough that Eric Holder hasn’t fired him or excoriated him. Hmmm. That leaves . . . Eric Holder.

But that’s just the beginning. Eric Holder serves at the President’s pleasure. It’s obviously his pleasure that Holder continue in authority. He has made no demand for an explanation from the Justice Department. It seems that it’s all okay with him. So, either the President is on board with Fast and Furious or thought it up himself, or he backs Holder, who either is the instigator or backs up the instigator. Now what more do we need to know here? The guns are used for illegal, deadly purposes, they are paid for through our taxes, no one in a position of responsibility has a problem with that.

So Congress is finally considering action finding Holder “in contempt of Congress” because he isn’t forthcoming? Isn’t that just a little lame? OF COURSE he has contempt for Congress. This Congress has failed to call the President on his forgeries, his abuse of the Constitution, his swaggering contempt for the integrity of our elections, for national sovereignty itself. Who wouldn’t have contempt for this Congress? The proper course for Congress is impeachment, not hearings about “contempt” charges. We all know what happened to Richard Nixon when he attempted to cover for his friends. All they did was break into an office building,. As far as I have ever heard, no one was killed. But demand that this administration account for itself? Never. And this is the tragedy. Our country is only as sound as its moral integrity. Forget armaments, forget industry or money in banks. If we have no moral standards, as we have effectively advertised through our own Congress, we are in every sense bankrupt. It is symptomatic of the same ills that have our government betraying valuable agents and allies throughout the rest of the world.

We have the leadership we deserve unless we demand that Congress act effectively, and resolutions about Eric Holder being “in contempt” make me laugh, almost as hard as they make Eric Holder and Barack Obama laugh.
