SALLY MORRIS: A MODEST PROPOSAL FOR YOUR REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE
A couple of headlines to mull over here:
“Trump: If RNC cuts me off, I'll stop funding them”
“Donald Trump begins contemplating the unthinkable: He might lose”
Think about these two headlines for a moment. Trump is demanding that the RNC keep sending money his way rather than to Senate and House candidates and he is “contemplating” losing. Why on earth should the RNC be paying for his campaign when he doesn’t care about the down ticket? Have they forgotten that the Legislative branch holds the power? Have they bought into the nonsense of Executive primacy? Their behavior would suggest that they have indeed. Because they are funding a man who has been undercutting numerous candidates from coast to coast and threatening to fund super PACs to primary others. This is beyond ridiculous.
If there weren’t enough reason to get him off the ticket before this, in a sane world, this should do the trick.
The probable scenario he outlines is that Hillary will become President. This could work in favor of America for this reason: she is nearly unequalled in her unpopularity – challenged only by Trump himself. If a number of key conservatives survive the election to go to or return to Congress they could conceivably mount a formidable opposition to Hillary’s worst ideas. They could save America. On the other hand, if the RNC keeps throwing good money after bad at Trump’s pathetic and suicidal campaign they could lose the Senate and even the House – in fact, odds are they will. They might anyway due to the incredible damage Trump has done already. He is undermining the conservative base of the party at every turn. He is sabotaging his own campaign such that it is becoming a common assumption that he is nothing more than a Democrat plant.
He has just stated he doesn’t care what happens to the House or Senate! Does that bother any of those “Republican or Die” lesser-of-evils people? It should. If by the most remote and unlikely event that Trump should prevail, we could still lose the Congress. His plans and programs are farther to the left than Hillary’s – he is even putting it in those terms. He doesn’t want Obamacare – he wants National Health Care (a la Scotland). He doesn’t want Hillary’s budget – he wants to double it. He doesn’t want to simply look shifty to our allies like Hillary would and Obama has – he has stated he’d leave them out to dry if Russia attacked. Where do we go with this? Even if the Republican majorities in Congress by a miracle did survive, they would be neutered by having Trump at the head of the party. He has a God complex. He giveth and he taketh away – at least in his own opinion. As President he would be the final arbiter of the fate of any individual serving in Congress or the Senate. So – if someone of character and integrity stands against him that person would be destroyed by Trump. Obviously Democrats wouldn’t oppose Trump – why would they? They’ve been trying to get here for decades! If Hillary, however, were President we might have a chance to thwart her worst ideas and her worst nominees. After all, Hillary can’t play the race card to demand allegiance across the aisle. She’s on her own, unlike Obama.
Clearly, the long view demands that Trump be dumped from the ticket, someone – anyone within reason -substituted and most of the money in the RNC coffers be devoted to saving Congress. It is unlikely that anyone can become President this year other than Hillary. It would amount to an heroic sacrifice fly, but it would be an act of patriotism if someone were to step in. Republican National delegates need to be contacted and we need to demand that they take this hoax off of our ticket – now.
Tell your National Committeeman that it is his/her responsibility – no one else’s. Tell them the buck stops with them. They got us into this mess – now it is time they man up and deal with it. I have communicated with some. I get low-level comebacks like “that would mess up elections in years to come”. Can you believe that? Could an election be more messed up than this? “Hits on him don’t stand the test of time – they only last a day or two”! If anything shortens the shelf life of Trump gaffes it is the emergence of the next one. Who can linger on his “second amendment people” comment when he ups the ante with “Obama started ISIS”? When any of his embarrassed supporters tries to hold the door open for him to escape his own feckless tongue, he abruptly kicks them in the shins and slams the door on their fingers. The RNC representatives need to be reminded of this. They will look pretty shabby on Inaugural Day as Hillary takes office and Trump takes off on his very, very nice vacation with his kids. The ones left standing in the mud will be these RNC types. Hillary will be grinning. Trump will be grinning. What will they be doing?
Only they can save Congress. I doubt seriously that anyone they could substitute can win at this point. But neither can Trump. Congress will in all likelihood be lost if he remains on the ticket. Simple as that. No point in arguing about “in-fighting” or stubborn “Cruz supporters”. This is not about Cruz and it’s not about anyone else. It is about Trump. We had better choices, but the RNC allowed this to happen at their convention. Now they need to fix it or be held personally responsible if they do not try.
