SALLY MORRIS: A NEW EPIDEMIC THREATENS US - BICS
Just when we are hoping that the coronavirus is winding down, a new and terrifying disease is beginning to surge through our country and Canada. For lack of an official name for it I will call it BICS (Because I Can Syndrome).
Americans and most Canadians have been brought up in freedom. We don’t all exercise all of our freedoms every day as we should. Many of us are too concerned with being politically correct, or polite. Or we are just too lazy to stand up for what we really think. Intellectually flaccid, perhaps. But underneath it all is an expectation that if we wanted to we could. We take for granted that if the spirit so moved us we could take a walk through the park, or if our pug’s spirit moved him we could take him to his tree for much-needed relief. But because of the BICS epidemic we are finding out that to do these perfectly normal (and non-threatening) things will get us fined or perhaps a stint in the hoosegow.
BICS tends to afflict those who hold what they believe are all-powerful jobs, most of them at the will of the people (and we can only hope not for long). The All-Powerful Potentate and Mayor of San Clemente, CA, decided it would be amusing to prevent kids who have been locked up indoors for two months now, from taking their skateboards to a skateboard park and getting a little desperately needed exercise. Better to have them sit around on the couch with the clicker or with their thumbs on their cell phones playing endless and boring games, eating cheetos and maybe experimenting with weed. So with a flourish he ordered that the skateboard facility be filled with sand. That’ll show ‘em who’s boss! It didn’t work that well. He merely turned the skateboard park into a dirt bike park, and the fun went on anyway.
In British Columbia a man was fined over $800 for takIng his four children rollerblading in an empty and deserted parking lot. They’d been cooped up for days on end and it was a beautiful spring day. Why not let them work off some of their pent-up energy away from crowds in an empty parking lot? In Sarnia, Ontario, a retired fellow, was trying to take his little Shih Tzu out for her daily constitutional. He used the back stairs in his apartment building, avoiding the elevator so as not to violate “distancing” protocol. Obviously it is in no one’s interest that little Fluffy do her business in the apartment, but nevertheless, one of the citizen spies and tattlers called in a complaint that he was outside! The police showed up and wrote him a ticket for an $825 fine. It didn’t seem entirely reasonable to the man, so he called on the services of Ezra Levant of Rebel Media, who has a project to defend people who have been unfairly fined by the government. He was interviewed and the interview aired on Ezra’s show. The police came back and told the man they had good news for him. The fine was being rescinded! He thanked them politely and then they shoved a new ticket in his face - this time he was being fined $1,300. His crime? Talking to Ezra Levant about it.
Levant is asking people who are being bullied and treated badly by the authorities to contact him. He is offering to provide legal defense (or “defence”) for them at no cost. His aim is to protect people’s “charter rights” as they are called in Canada. He’s got his work cut out for him. There have been two street ministers who have been fined over $800 for feeding the homeless. The Christians who attempt to hold services over the radio to people congregated in their cars with their windows up, are being threatened.
Down here in the Land of the Free, His Honor Mayor de Blasio, just bragged about having disrupted a funeral and dispersed a gathering of Hassidic Jews who were mourning the death and celebrating the life of their rabbi, who had just died of coronavirus. It is not enough that we can’t be with loved ones in their last hours - we are not even permitted to mourn them when they die. (“When I heard, I went there myself to ensure the crowd was dispersed. And what I saw WILL NOT be tolerated so long as we are fighting the Coronavirus.”) Might de Blasio have issued a request that funerals be postponed until a future date? Might people have been more inclined to work with him on this? But no. In de Blasio’s world he is All-Powerful, not to be questioned. He has no need of cooperation of the people - his word must be law, and enforced corporeally if necessary. De Blasio has been accused of anti-semitism and he is feeding that image every day during this pandemic. An ethnic Jew himself, he has attempted to hide the fact, changing his name from Warren Wilhelm to William de Blasio. Kinda sounds more Italian that way. He has his problems. A snitch line he set up so New Yorkers could tattle on each other backfired also. People filled the answer tape with citizens' reports of seeing the Mayor himself performing lewd acts behind a 7-11 and other similar messages, one of which was a picture of de Blasio with a little Hitler moustache. He shut the line down.
But he’s not alone. Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, referred to by this writer earlier as resembling a Disney stepmother, has proclaimed that the only elective medical procedure she will allow is abortion. She has decreed that you cannot buy paint, or grass seed, or gardening tools, or clothing in Michigan - until she says so. All work has been stopped in the state. In case you hadn’t thought of this, Michigan is known for its bulbs. It is into the outdoors. Parks are shut down. It’s not working out too well for Gretchen - citizens descended on Lansing to protest en masse. And now she is being sued. Again - what if she had just made nice and said, “Look - this is really difficult. We need to all be responsible. You want this to go away as much as I do, and if we all wear a mask when in public, avoid crowding by keeping six feet of space between us in the stores, avoid unnecessary trips to the store, etc., and postpone your birthday parties and weddings for a bit we might lick this sooner,” the chances are that she would find cooperation and even empathy for her difficult position. But no. She, too, was stricken with BICS.
BICS broke out in Vermont, where stores' aisles were roped off - by law - so that shoppers could not reach "non-essentials" such as cosmetics or clothing, thus crowding shoppers into a few small spaces. Well, that makes sense.
In Kentucky Governor Beshear ordered that no one attend church on Easter Sunday. Those who tried found the road to their church carpeted with nails to ensure that worshipers would have flat tires. Police were also present to intimidate and bully them.
Pastors have been fined in various venues for attempting to get around the problem of congregating by holding services in drive-in movie fashion, as did the Canadian pastor. There is no chance that people sitting in their cars listening to their radios, people who need their religion as never before, could possibly pose a risk of contagion.
Today I see that Toronto’s Mayor John Tory has walled off the cherry trees so that townspeople are prevented from enjoying the cherry blossoms, a lovely once-a-year phenomenon. He has also walled off whole parks. Because nothing is better for stopping a virus like sitting home in a confined space breathing recirculated air in an apartment complex. Seriously, one of the things that is known to kill off a virus like this is sunlight and fresh air. Fortunately the weather permits this now in most of North America. So, think the BICS-afflicted lords, now is the time to “crack down”! God forbid any of us should remember life before the pandemic or dream of a future.
Why can’t these lunatics just state their case and ask for the public to help them? Why do they get such a rush from dictating to other people? We will soon have more dictators. Guys like Bill Gates, whose billions have helped to sustain some of the malevolent organizations which have had a part in spreading this pandemic (like the WHO) will cash in further on some sort of vaccine. It won’t be the money he’ll rake in - God knows he’ll never spend all of what he has - but it will be the POWER he has to force it into people’s bodies. That motivates him. Power can become an illness.
Americans, as noted above, are created in and raised in an atmosphere of freedom. Canadians to a somewhat lesser extent, but still they consider themselves free adults, capable of living their lives and making informed decisions (that’s why freedom of speech and information is vital). We don’t need or want someone telling us when and how often we may shop for groceries. That is how they do things in China. That’s why we generally don’t want to live in China. We should not desire this kind of government or this kind of lifestyle. We should not look favorably on our own leaders when they copy the behavior of Chinese tyrants and we should also not look with approval at our national leaders when they praise these despicable totalitarians. We should object when Trump does.
BICS has been around a long time and it is a universal human disease. It is selective and only attacks those who feel themselves to be in some way superior to their fellow humans. I remember a line in an old 1930s movie. Some elderly women lived in a home for old ladies. They had a keeper, of course, a martinet who kept catching them “doing things” - creating things such as . . . cooking. She caught two of these old ladies in the kitchen after hours one night baking biscuits. She ordered them back to bed. “We can’t have you in here baking biscuits! If we let you do it, everyone will want to do it! Then what would we have?” The old lady came back with, “You’d have a lot of nice biscuits!”
It seems that we have a closed society in China which permitted, through censorship and punishment and intimidation, a deadly virus to spread throughout the world. A society and a social system that doesn’t work except in the short term and for a very few dictators at the top. An evil system that spreads misery instead of creating abundance and freedom. It would appear that the CCP is run by a group of people who are afflicted with BICS. It seems that the very worst of the worst of those who have risen to top levels in our society have the disease. They are emulating the people who have given us the coronavirus pandemic to begin with. And it seems that most of them are Democrats. Hmmm.
We should start immediately to work on finding a cure for BICS.
