SALLY MORRIS:  A PANDEMIC OF MAGICAL THINKING

As we lurch through the weeks and months and years of covid, the phenomenon seems to be dividing us into two basic groups: those who question, even after giving the authorities their head at first, the wisdom of some of the advice we are hearing when stacked up against the evidence, and those who become more doggedly – and aggressively – devoted to the official narrative and the directives of these authorities.  This is not about "vaxxed" vs "unvaxxed".  Rather, it is about those who find it possible to coexist with those who do not agree 100% with them, who are not in lockstep with them . . . and those who cannot.

We are all becoming familiar with the karens in the discount and grocery stores who scream and lose themselves in panic when they see someone enter without a mask and the people who decide to cut off friends and family who do not agree with their faithful interpretation of covid and their adherence to these official orders relating to it – the social distancing, the isolating and mask-wearing, the endless testing, the self-inflicted damage of repeated injections of something the makeup of which remains a mystery, on faith and now the inflicting of this on children.

The divide seems to be not one of mere preferences or surface considerations but a far deeper difference – these people who seem to be refusing to cooperate with the authorities and their regulations see them as inimical not only to our Constitutional freedoms but to the most basic of human rights. Forcing someone to cover his mouth and nose is not a mere behavioral regulation but is interference with his breathing and speech. It is more than an inconvenience, but to some a hazard and to those who do not wish to wear a “tag” it is a deep insult. Vaccines, of course, are another dimension altogether. Injecting something foreign into the human body is not normal and to do it against one’s free will is unacceptable to a civilized person.

To the followers of the authority figures, this kind of independence is unacceptable. If one cannot be made to conform, they believe, he must be incarcerated in some camp or quarantine facility or other prison. The people in charge of many of our institutions and governments seem to be relying on this latter group of people to reinforce their power and continually egg them on with dire predictions of death and illness – witness Joe Biden’s holiday message to us all. Needless to say, the karens are lapping it up. Why, we must ask. Why on earth do people want to hear this kind of speech to kick off their holiday celebrations?

Many people who have made the choice to use the vaccines clearly see the problem with mandating them for those who do not feel that they are right for them.  Most of those who have decided not to take the vaccines have no problem with those who decide to take them, provided they are giving their informed consent.  The problem comes with attempting to force any kind of experiment on anyone who has not given this informed consent.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, two years into his dictatorship by proxy, without a win to his name yet as far as public health is concerned (we aren’t talking about his personal success here), is still telling us how, when, where and with whom to celebrate our holidays. He has ordered us to ensure that our guests, be they friends or family, either present their vaccination cards or submit to a test outside before entering our homes to gather around the table and the Christmas tree for family festivities. That, to the normal person, would definitely put the damper on a family get together. But nevertheless, the karen contingent will obey this. Some, hosting the dinner, had guests waiting for test results in the garage or on the front steps. Others, guests, were demanding that everyone else accommodate them.

We have observed previously how the first and perhaps the most devastating loss from covid has been civility. It seems obvious when we see people screaming at others in stores – we’ve all seen the frantic grocery shoppers. Here is a recent post where a man attempted to smell a scented candle by taking his mask down for a second. Mind you, he was wearing it and moved it only to see if he liked the candle. Note the panic in the store clerk’s voice and the hostility. Is this “normal”? I have said that even where you don’t have a violent confrontation the unpleasantness permeates the atmosphere anyway – people seldom even make eye contact anymore. Imagine the world young children are growing up in – they probably can’t remember what civility and decent manners were – if they ever experienced them.

It is the same now with vaccine mandates. Restaurants and shops – even grocery stores – in various parts of the US and Canada – are refusing entrance to anyone who cannot produce a vaccine passport. Recently a five-year-old boy was kicked out of a New York pizzeria. What kind of world have we acceded to? How much insanity are we willing to accept? And why are these people so adamant in their defense of this outrageous behavior?

Those who disagree with this, on the other hand, have seen evidence which convinces them, at least, that there is no basis in reason or reality for these extreme measures. Those who do not agree with this response to the virus have cited the fact of its very low mortality rate, the fact that children almost never contract covid. They see mounting evidence of harm to people’s health who have taken the vaccine. They have seen shocking sudden heart attacks, strokes and seizures. They have seen disabled children, mothers and fathers, they have heard testimony from health care workers who have witnessed injuries and deaths following vaccination, and that these are going largely unrecorded. Why unrecorded? This question confronts us. Why not seek all the information we can? After all, this is a massive experiment on millions of human beings. Why not record the truth? Why not assemble as much information as can be taken from these experiments? Why not, indeed.

The data in terms of statistics does not support the idea of either masks, vaccines or social distancing. This data is not in dispute. Interpretation of this data one way or the other could be valid. But here’s another stubborn fact: the injections remain “experimental” and are not “approved” on paper in the fine print. They are presented to us as “approved” but in fact they are not. Why? We also know that an injury resulting from an unapproved experiment is usually not covered by insurance and the injured party cannot seek damages from the companies which are making the money on the vaccines. Our government is buying these with our tax dollars and now attempts to force them through “mandates”. How does this make objective sense to the doubter?

So we have reasons established in science and experience to “hesitate” (which is now a negative word) to jump into this experiment. We have no reason to believe, even if we listen to the officials, that the vaccines or the masks actually help to curb the virus. So why are those who are demanding that we all “comply” with all of this so . . . fanatic? The word “unhinged” comes to mind.

The only reasonable explanation for this is a kind of mass psychosis. A lot has recently been offered in terms of theory on this, but it is characterized by a kind of magical thinking. Today we heard that Whoopi Goldberg is utterly bewildered that somehow she has “tested positive for covid”. Goldberg, prior to the Christmas holidays, learned that someone she had been around had been covid-positive. She decided the responsible thing to do was to isolate herself. She spent the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in isolation, self-quarantining. Today she announced that she would not be back to work just yet. Despite more than two weeks of isolation and being double vaccinated and boostered, that is three shots – she tested positive. She can’t figure out how that can happen. Why not? Most of us are aware of the technique of turning up the number of cycles in the testing to produce a positive result. It’s commonplace. Some of us know this because we seek the information. The number can be turned up or down at the whim of whoever wants to use the outcome as a basis for making and enforcing their preferred policies. But not Whoopi Goldberg. She can’t understand. She is not exceptional. We also just learned that you can contract covid in Antarctica despite isolation and shots.

It is like the people who scream about someone not wearing a mask. When we were kids sometimes someone would hold up their fingers in a cross as though to ward off whatever they thought was on another kid’s mind or tongue. Now we have people – adults – screaming in the marketplace.

Obviously the inner circle of policy makers do not believe their own pronouncements. This is why we see them at parties. Gavin Newsom partying at the French Laundry restaurant. AOC partying at a gay lounge in Florida. The Obama birthday bash. Anthony Fauci cheek by jowl at a Nationals baseball game – all of them without a mask. Yet former advisor Deborah Birx was attempting to enforce mask wearing in her own home and with her parents until their condition began deteriorating and she realized she had to abandon the practice. We’ve seen extraordinary inventions in an attempt to “normalize” wearing a covering over our faces. We’ve been astonished to see students in band practice in a Wisconsin high school – in pods. If it were not so tragic we would be laughing.

Magical thinking is the only explanation – willful rejection of reason. Anthony Fauci has told us that he “represents science”. Until now anyone who made such a ridiculous statement would be immediately recognized by one and all as a megalomaniac. But no. He continues and he gets the attention of the media and the people and of course, the politicians. He rules. Or at least he and his adherents think he does.

Those who are promoting population control, the idea of “trans-humanism”, mind control, all make this clear to anyone who will listen – they do not hide their agenda. Yet we have poor Whoopi Goldberg perplexed at her situation. How could this be?

A people who will line up in their cars for an opportunity to get in on having someone in purple rubber gloves stick a 10” stick up their noses to their brain membrane, who will applaud when a weird little man calls himself the representative of “science”, who devotedly wear masks and attack those who do not, who willingly accept the injection into their bodies of an unknown substance which is not even claimed to protect against infection, which is shown to cause devastating injury and death and for which there is no coverage for damage, is a people in the thrall of magical thinking. There is no other way to explain it.

When we are not allowed to discuss policy, to debate the science, to share information, there is every reason for the sane person to doubt. When an individual claims he represents “science”, that the “science is settled” or when our social media as well as commercial outlets deplatform, censor or suspend anyone who even questions a prevailing theory or pronouncement, we are drifting into perilous seas. It is time to call out those who refuse to reason with others, who deny evidence before them, who engage in delusional magical thinking. Unless we do this dangerous cult behavior will lead us all to either death or concentration camps.
