SALLY MORRIS: AN AMERICAN CHRISTMAS STORY
Two hundred and forty-four years ago tonight, General George Washington led his troops in a daring raid on soldiers rented out to King George III by the Hessian prince Various mishaps and inadvertencies made the effort more chancey, but nevertheless, on Christmas night, 1776, Washington made his move, crossing the icy, dark waters of the Delaware River. If you are of a certain age you will recall this event commemorated in one of a number of famous paintings depicting the event - almost every public school had a print hanging on a wall.
His mission was to defeat tyranny. Few of our younger people today and even few of our senior Americans today have a real appreciation of the struggle which gave us our freedom. We have for far too long gone about as though freedom were “free”, that there was no longer any need to put up a fight for it. Obviously this is very foolish and feckless. Our people need to reconnect with our past - a past of bloody battle to secure what we gloss over today. It is fitting that today, Christmas Day, we pause for just a little bit as we celebrate, to remember and revere the sacrifices of our forefathers.
Where are we today, after many decades of scorning our founding and the battle to secure it and of taking our gift of freedom for granted? If there were ever an example of looking a gift horse in the mouth the American people today might be it. What we don’t have to fight for we do not value. Our freedom was too easy. Today we have lost nearly all of it. What Washington thought was worth the hazardous battle at Trenton, and crossing the icy Delaware for, that for which he and his troops prayed for victory, we have allowed the most inconsequential and worthless persons - state governors, mayors of our cities - even unelected people such as Dr. Fauci or the CDC - to simply abolish. Rand Paul has directed our attention to this. We are permitting services such as Twitter and Facebook and now Youtube to censor our speech - we have lost our freedom of press, association, worship, speech, assembly for redress of grievance. We have lost our right to work to earn a living. This is unprecedented. We - WE - empower this.
Governor Walz in Minnesota (may be soon be impeached and removed from office) has allowed only outdoor dining in restaurants. This week we have seen minus 40 degree wind chills. He insults us. We must rebuke him. We must remind him that he has not earned our respect. WE must stop him from destroying any more of the state. With this in our hearts and minds we must begin to work on it in 2021. Why not? We have no work and we have nothing better to do now.
But today is Christmas. The 244th anniversary of Washington’s daring crossing of the Delaware. Here is a patriotic story of one Christmas so long ago. It runs about half an hour. If the kids are restless, if you want to settle down, consider watching this and then talking about it later. Remember - they have not likely been taught any of this. They have mostly been ROBBED of their heritage. Watch this with them. And all be grateful for these sacrifices that were made for them and for you.
