SALLY MORRIS:  AN UNCIVIL SOCIETY

In a very short period of time America has become an extremely un-civil society.   Does anyone still remember 2019?  When no one was scrawling obscenities on our courthouse buildings?

If there is anyone out there who is still trying to make excuses for this incivility, please check yourself.  Would YOU stick your finger in a stranger’s face and lecture HIM about, let’s say, “race”?  What’s wrong with people?

What we are seeing today is the harvesting of a crop which we planted about two generations ago, when we dumped our children off at daycare and then in public schools.  We have carefully nurtured it in an overly solicitous attitude toward those we have elected to consider “disadvantaged”, even though they are distinctly not disadvantaged, and, in fact, enjoy advantages over most of the rest of us.  We have stood mutely by while our colleges have taught our kids to hate their heritage, their families, their country and the white race.

Now we have moved from insolent, rude, obnoxiously self-satisfied and uninformed university students and their equally uninformed or blatantly dishonest professors, to mob violence in one season.  We went from bending over backwards to offer opportunities to minorities in terms of employment and education, to completely de-normalizing all white people and casting them as villains in a blanket indictment based on not even a whiff of thin air.

America has provided freedom and opportunities for education and prosperity unknown anywhere else or in any other time in history.  Until very recently it has been the “land of opportunity” as well as the “land of the free and the home of the brave”.  Now even our national anthem is being held in disgrace, along with our Constitution - which ensures all of this opportunity and freedom - and our founding fathers, who risked all to set the stage for it.

None of these vacant-eyed, feckless students even knows what these men sacrificed.  Most of them risked hanging just to give these useless blobs a chance to be free.  Today they are spitting - literally - on that sacrifice and that high-mindedness, in order to gratify some sense of self-loathing.  They feel virtuous in their self-flagellation.  Their flinty-eyed organizers are another story.  They have an agenda all their own.  They are mostly professionals.  The closest thing to what they are is bolsheviks, soulless ideologues intent on the overthrow of our government founded in freedom in favor of communism.  It is not something which happened overnight, of course.  They, too, were turned long ago.  They are, by their own boast, “trained organizers, trained Marxists”.

Our political class is dominated by those who are either comrades of these organizers or cowed by them.  Look at our mayors.  Once it was considered a good thing for a mayor to uphold law and order in his city, to promote tourism, to support business.  Today we see them joining the mobs in the streets, calling for defunding/dismantling the police, turning the police headquarters buildings over to the mobs to destroy, ordering police to stand down while mobs destroy, deface, abuse and loot.  They are on the side of the mobs - the abusers, the law-breakers.  They are satisfied with their work - destroying the economies of their cities, making their citizens unsafe in their own homes, on their own streets.  They take pride in the chaos.  Then they turn on others to blame.  Chicago’s mayor, Laurie Lightfoot did so this week, blaming the crime wave she has fed and nurtured in her failed leadership and consorting with criminals, on “Republicans” and on gun ownership.  Who does she think should have guns?  People who want to protect themselves, their families, their businesses, their property?  Or people who want to destroy and kill innocent people?  She seems to be on the side of the latter.  If she doesn’t like increased gun ownership, maybe she should not back mob violence.  Maybe she should provide protection for the innocent and for their property and the public’s property instead of taking her counsel from the criminals.  Whose opinion did she seek regarding the recent “removal” of the Christoper Columbus statue?  The people?  God, no.  She got her advice from the mob.

Look at St. Louis.  The mayor of St. Louis allowed violence to get out of hand to the point where arson was going unchallenged.  An innocent man saying his rosary was beaten to a pulp by a thug with brass knuckles.  Good for him.  No response.  When a violent gang broke down a property owner’s gate and interrupted his dinner with his wife, the property owner did what any sane man would do - he came out with his rifle.  His wife came out with a handgun.  Neither the man nor his wife fired a shot - they simply showed their arms.  The gangsters melted away.  Now the criminal who serves as St. Louis city attorney is prosecuting them for “brandishing” their guns.  Remember - they didn’t fire a shot.  “Brandishing” is a crime in St. Louis.  Bet you didn’t know that.  Without any force or violence, this couple managed to restore law and order on their property where they - and the gangsters - all knew police would not come to their aid.  They should get a medal.  Instead they may get a prison sentence and/or fine and need to be “pardoned” by the Governor of Missouri.  (Using the word “pardon” instead of just expunging the record of commitment of a crime has always seemed wrong to me - if you’ve done nothing wrong you should not need to be “pardoned”.)  Does any of this make sense - to a normal person, I mean?  Anyway, they were formally charged with “misuse of a weapon”.  This involved taking Mrs. McCloskey’s gun apart (it was not functional the day she “brandished” it) and re-assembling it at the police lab to make it functional, so she, too, could be charged.  Does any of this seem weird to you?  Yeah. Me too.  But it becomes more clear when you learn that the prosecuting attorney, Kim Gardner, was supported for the office (an elected office) by George Soros.  So now, a couple faced with a threatening mob on their own property, who defused the situation without firing a shot, faces up to four years in prison.  This was a textbook case of why we need and should preserve the Second Amendment.  Compared with any other option, this is a real standout.  But because someone exercised his constitutional and God-given right to defend himself, he is prosecuted by the law in St. Louis.  Is this the America we grew up in?  Well, it is and it isn’t.  We grew up here, alright,  it’s the same country.  But we didn’t teach our kids what we were taught.  We left that to others.

Now we see the results.  It isn’t pretty.  We might not even survive it as a nation.  America is burning to the ground, our people are under deadly assault by gangs of thugs, aided and abetted by our mayors and governors . . . and we are prissily watching our “social distancing” and dutifully covering our faces to go into a grocery store.  Even there we are devolving into incivility.  Last week a demented woman in a dog park pepper sprayed a couple having lunch there in the company of their dog, allegedly because they were not wearing masks - outdoors - at a dog park.  There seems to be no shred of sanity left.

Perhaps the ill-advised months of lockdown to address the virus attack and the unnatural “social distancing” and mask-wearing has created mental problems.  It has certainly magnified depression.  The giving way to mob violence is just too much - now no one feels any need to be civil, say nothing of friendly or polite, anymore.

In Portland, Oregon, a few weeks ago, the mob (let’s just refer to it as a general mob - it’s the same everywhere) - broke a public fountain so the water would all run out and they could set a fire the purpose of which was to melt down a beautiful bronze statue of an elk.  This took all night long.  Do you want to know how long it takes to destroy a bronze statue by melting it?  Now we know.  All night long.  The police and the fire department just stood by and did nothing.  Or maybe they were back in the bunker playing checkers and telling yarns.  Who knows?  Not necessarily all their fault because they were told not to intervene by Portland’s sorry mayor.  Never mind that this statue was incapable of offending anyone.  Never mind that it was an exquisite work of art.  Never mind that it will never be replaced.  Never mind that Portland will never be as beautiful as it once was and that no one can duplicate what was lost that night.  For what?  Good question.  And that is precisely the point.  All this gnashing of teeth and screaming of obscenities is all for nothing.  There is no cause.  Just ask the man behind the curtain.

Now it’s gone from Robert E. Lee to Lincoln to Washington and Jefferson to Hamilton to Columbus, to Grant, to various celebrated abolitionists to Frederick Douglass, to a beautiful statue of an elk donated about 100 years ago to the city by a grateful and affectionate citizen.  What next?  Babe, the Blue Ox?  You, maybe?  Because none of this is about race or equal opportunity or prejudice or anything like that.  It is about overthrowing our government and destroying our culture.  That and nothing more.  Those who fall for this become part of the problem.  We need to defy it.  We need to cancel it.
