SALLY MORRIS: BEWARE OF WHOM YOU SUPPORT
This is for those of you who intend to participate in the decision as to who will represent the Republican Party in the coming midterm elections. True, this is not a “presidential” year, but in a way all elections are. They are generally a sort of referendum on how things are going in the current administration. This year is no exception - in fact, this year the state of the presidency and the last presidency are very much at the forefront of our discussion.
We have on the one hand an obviously senile old man who is going through the motions, a puppet operated by those whose identity we might only speculate on. We do know that Joe Biden is not responsible for anything, which is the only possible defense he could put up for what he has done to our country - crippling inflation, an epidemic of vaccine injuries, a decimated military complete with an absolutely disgraceful conduct of our “withdrawal” from Kabul, a border that has ceased to exist to our south, a pending famine and perhaps even a nuclear war - all against the background of a thoroughly corrupt crime family of his own complete with unsavory and almost certainly illegal ties to foreign hostile governments. It would be difficult not to vote against anyone promoted by this regime.
Then comes Donald Trump. He just held a big rally in Pennsylvania last week for one of his proteges - Dr. Mehmet Oz. Now, what would have prompted Trump to promote this man? He had just managed to overcome a lot of reservations among conservatives who quite reasonably believed that his strong associations with some rather disgusting celebrities (remember that he had donated to the Clinton Foundation just to get Hillary to his Big Wedding and on the eve of his nomination had donated $100K to them, just to mention one) created doubt as to his values, when he “fast-tracked” “his” “vaccines”. This has become a literal disaster. It has caused death and untold human suffering and economic loss, with people’s jobs either dictating an unwanted and potentially deadly injection in exchange for the right to go to work. Trump is the author of this. Biden simply thumbed a ride on it and is, as with all other areas of life, making things even worse.
That wasn’t enough. Instead of acting on the evidence as it unfolded for all to see, and recanting his promotion of these so-called “vaccines”, he has doubled down. Now he has endorsed Dr. Oz, a usurper of the place of a proper - hopefully conservative - Republican candidate for the Senate from Pennsylvania. Oz, in turn, famously endorses the Chinese response to the covid “virus” (which they colluded with the US to create in Wuhan). He likes the lockdowns - a brutal example of oppression which is characteristic of the Chinese approach to everything - and feels that we, in America, should be following the Chinese example. Why would Trump (or anyone, for that matter) support this extremely unattractive candidate for no less than the US Senate?
As if the endorsement itself were not enough, Trump is now holding rallies for him. At the recent one he went further - he brought up on the stage with him Woody Johnson, the “owner” (or perhaps former owner) of Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical giant. Johnson & Johnson has had a spotty record. Despite copious advertising and name recognition in the US, this company has been fined for its use of asbestos in its baby powder, just to mention one horrible example. So far the company has sustained fines of $2.2 billion for its reckless conduct and the endangerment of innocent citizens. Nevertheless, the profits are so great that Woody Johnson was even able to impress Trump: "Also with us are some friends of mine . . . Woody Johnson, a great gentleman, did you ever hear of Johnson & Johnson? He owns the place - I tell ya what. This guy's got cash like nobody's got cash. Johnson & Johnson . . . . "
Now we know for sure that nothing affects Trump like someone with a lot of money. So, does this make him a guy we should look to for advice on whom we should put on a ticket and vote for? To their credit, the attendees of this rally for this undeserving candidate at least had the decency to boo. What is Trump thinking here? Can he be serious? Does he think this is a good way to gin up his influence with the voters? Does he think he can run again?
The problem is he is already running and he hasn’t got a clue. Does he restrict his intake of news to CNN? One wonders. Is he remotely aware that we now know the hazards of “his” “vaccine”? Are we supposed to be impressed that he is on intimate terms with Woody Johnson? Should we then support Trump’s endorsed candidates? Dr. Oz, for example?
Voters in primaries as well as delegates to nominating conventions need to get off the Trump train long enough to carefully evaluate these candidates for themselves. Quite obviously Trump is not supporting conservative candidates. To some of us this is no surprise at all. Many of us have known from Day One that Trump was no more conservative than Teddy Roosevelt - which is to say that he is basically a Democrat who runs as a Republican.
The fact that the opposition is so outrageous and so ridiculous and so dangerous does not change the fact that Trump is also touting dangerous candidates. Oz, for one, would be a disaster. “Any port in a storm,” some might try to argue. “Oz is better than a Democrat!” But we don’t need Oz. In fact, the race for the GOP nomination in Pennsylvania is hotly contended with several candidates vying for the job. Trump should have endorsed McCormick. Why he didn’t, why he jumped in for Oz, is difficult to understand. But with Trump ego massage goes a very long way.
Pennsylvanians owe it to themselves and their country to scrutinize carefully the past activities and positions of all of these candidates. Instead, they might just take the short-cut and follow their Pied Piper, Trump, off a cliff. Let’s hope that cooler heads prevail and that others will be heard before the vote. Oz would be a disaster in the Senate. This is the problem with a cult of personality, which is what the Trump following really is. Those who cleave to Trump tend to just overlook his glaring faults because the other side is so terrible, which is, when you are honestly looking at it, exactly the RINO argument that got us where we are now - bankrupt, invaded ourselves and looking down the barrel of a nuclear war with Russia over a country that is better off without us - Woody Johnson’s Ukrainian wife notwithstanding.
