SALLY MORRIS:  CEMENTING INEQUALITY

In Canada and the U.S., racism is rampant. No, I’m not kidding. Just today, two different stories came to my attention.

First, a reader sent me this: https://alphanews.org/mankato-schools-vote-to-allow-extra-pay-for-non-white-teachers/. Read it. You might find it hard to believe. Apparently the school board in Mankato has decided that the cure for something is racism in the form of discriminatory pay based on skin color. How enlightened of them. They are using a Minnesota law which provides stipends for “mentoring” and the school board just up and decided that they would only allow these stipends to go to minority race people. Only they get to be “mentors”, because of their race.

Obviously this is not a legal use of the school district’s funds. It will be interesting to see whether anyone takes them to court. I strongly suspect they will be in court over this, and it will be interesting also to see whether the school board gets away with this nonsense. If they are allowed to use this state law to fund racism maybe the law ought to be repealed.

Elsewhere, up in Canada, Ontario has decided that minority teachers do not need to know math in order to teach it. You read that right. The government of Ontario has decided that minority people are not teachable, apparently. And in order to pass this deficiency along to future generations and render them, also, illiterate in math, they have decided not to require minority teachers to pass math proficiency tests. They have allowed these “teachers” to try multiple times to pass the tests but to no avail. The target group of teachers, minorities, seem to never pass them.

One would think the logical answer to this problem is to find the root cause, the failure in their education, and help them to become proficient, rather than just saying, “math is hard so you dummies don’t need to learn it – you can’t anyway”. In effect, this is exactly what Ontario is telling its minorities. In what universe is ignorance a pathway upward?

The end result, of course, will be students robbed of an education because someone else failed and the “system” decided to let the students pay. If this isn’t a war on these minorities, would someone please explain it. Canada, for all its “strong and free” has pursued a somewhat shadowy form of race discrimination since its inception, targeting mainly its indigenous population. They are still at it, only now with covid forced vaccination, but apparently Ontario is using the schools to cement inequality of opportunity.

During the era of slavery in the United States (and most likely other places) it was forbidden to teach a slave to read. The theory went that this would in some ways free the person, open the door to knowledge which might, in time, empower him. It was thought better to keep him in ignorance, powerless, inarticulate, poor, dependent – a slave in every way. What we are doing through abuse of our public education system, apparently not only in America but in Canada as well, is exactly the same thing. Only it is the entire younger generation that is being thus enslaved. It portends a very bleak future.
