SALLY MORRIS:  CULTURAL RELATIVISM KILLS CULTURE

Recently Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) came under fire for suggesting that China’s latest contribution to world culture - another deadly virus - may be the product of a bio lab just a stone’s throw from the Wuhan wet food market, where the first case of Coronavirus was identified in November of last year.  His suggestion is well worth investigating and he should in no way be criticized for asking the reasonable questions. Others have reasonable suspicions like Cotton’s.  After all, China is a rogue nation with a reputation for covering up the truth.  Is there any reason we should reject skepticism now?

One story which surfaced last week was that a woman who was employed at that lab tweeted that another woman who worked there was in the habit of taking animals which were discarded by the lab and selling them at the marketplace nearby. And it seems this wasn’t an isolated incident.   It seems that people there will buy and eat just about anything that has a heartbeat.  The tweet was scrubbed almost immediately and the woman tweeted again - this time pretending that someone had impersonated her and posted the tweet.  Everyone knows that no one tweets or brushes his teeth in China without it being observed and recorded and made part of the social credit score. So I think we can believe it.  Add to that the fact that a doctor who had tried to warn people in China about it was arrested, harassed and then died of the virus. He was a young man. And it is also worth noting that the entire market where this virus was first found has been closed, scrubbed clean and demolished, so little can be learned.  The Chinese have flat-out refused anyone from the West coming in to help to find answers. Why?

The government of China has lied as a matter of course from their beginnings.  They just have more and more to lie about. And we in the West are very, very gullible.  They know that some of us are smart enough to ask questions but they also know the skeptics will be pounded by the press and slandered and the public, ever willing to believe what makes them happier, will stick with their favorite TV anchor.

China could not care less how many Chinese die or who they are, as long as it’s not the deciders.  They have a cold attitude toward human life. In their opinion they have enough to spare a few million every once in a while in the interest of serving their state plans.  This is why they have forced abortions through their “one child” policy, which was in effect for a couple of generations, resulting in the unintended consequence that in people under 65 there are approximately 120 males for every 100 girls.  This has created problems of all kinds for China (and will, undoubtedly, for the rest of the world).  It results from a backward preference for one sex over the other which persists in places such as China.  The ratio is “self-engineered” by families themselves. Best not to ask how.

We need to understand that everyone is not like we are in the West.  It is a matter of our arrogance and ignorance that we have this prevailing belief.  It is just beyond our limited imagination to concede that a government would be willing to experiment on their own people or to allow something to kill their own population.  We shouldn’t be - we should be able to remember what we learned about the Tuskegee experiments. Still, that was not acceptable to our people and we have believed it was an uncharacteristic example.  It is. But China does this as a regular thing. Dissidents end up disappearing. They end up as political prisoners. They end up as organ donors. China is backward morally but it is fairly efficient and sophisticated in a way which recalls Hitler’s Nazi machine.

We need to accept this as truth and stop pretending that China is like us.  China is not alone, of course, in its disregard of human life.

Right now Erdogan of Turkey is practicing a particularly barbaric form of warfare against Europe.  He extorted money from the weak-kneed E.U. to hold off millions of “refugees” which he has allowed to gather in his country for no reason other than to use as weapons.  The E.U. paid and must not have got a receipt. Governments pay because they can, in turn, extort their people. But Erdogan counted the bills, had a good laugh and said he has never had any intention of stopping the flood.  Last week he bused thousands of these “refugees” to the border with Greece. They were met - surprise! - by the Greek army, and not allowed to cross. The Greeks pushed them back but - surprise again! - the Turks wouldn’t let them go back.  The last we heard these “refugees” are a sort of human wall which is being pushed back and forth. They are all young men, by the way. They bring along a few women and children to use as props. The women burn or otherwise inflict pain on the kids so they cry.  The Turks know this works for us. So our gullibility is contributing to child abuse. Look at it that way. They do it as a show for us. (And we are outraged that circuses abuse animals to entertain us!) Daniel Greenfield has an excellent article - one of the best I’ve ever read - in Front Page.  He is brutally honest here.

We have been experiencing a similar attack on our own border with Mexico - witness the campaign to “shame” us into throwing open the border and waving in anyone accompanied by a child.  We know now - and should have known then (and some did) that many of the children were “borrowed”, kidnapped or even bought to provide the means of entry - the golden key. Our humanitarian motives in desiring to keep “families” together and lessen the misery of these children has led to their abuse.  Of course portraying them as being “caged” was all it took. If we want to stop trafficking of innocent children the best thing we could do would be to not let it work. They are being used as a human weapon. Our peaceful and kindly motives work against us as they do against the innocent. We have a duty to our own children not to allow us to become Mexico or Central America.

Greenfield has cut through the haze and isolated the truth here - that the West, since the Second World War, when the “code of honor” of our enemies had broken down and resulted in them sending children into combat, has lost its will to win.  One would think that intelligent thought would demand that we not allow such deficient cultural attitudes as systemic exploitation of children to prevail, but we think only in the shortc term these days. So a country like North Vietnam, which sends children among American soldiers with bombs, or like Central American gangsters, who use children as shields to expand their nefarious activities into our own country, or those such as Erdogan who cynically stockpiles human beings to be used as cannon fodder in his drive to achieve his caliphate in Europe, have the decisive advantage over the West, which values and wishes to protect children and human life in general.

When we shut down good and self-challenging freedom of expression in the West through contrivances such as “political correctness”, “safe spaces”, “sensitivity”, etc., we are playing by rules which tie our feet together in a marathon.  We will not win this one under these conditions and we will thus ensure that what we abhor in a culture which abuses women and children and the vulnerable, will win and perpetuate the very things that we abhor. (And isn’t there also an irony in the fact that so many of us who are sickened at the sight of chidlren in distress are quite content to normalize and even glorify abortion?)

So Turkey gets to invade Greece with impunity because, “children”.  Guatemala and El Salvador get to move into Texas and Arizona because, “children”.  The worst dregs of humanity - MS-13 or Recep Erdogan (who is arming these “refugees” with tear gas, missiles and battering rams as he transport them by bus to the Greek border) use children as their props and window dressing.  And we will all suffer human and economic losses because China has a total lack of compassion for its own people. This is not the way civilization will survive.  It is rather the recipe for the death of civilization and the triumph of the darkest of man’s designs.

Unless we want to come under the same kind of system which murders its own people or uses them as weapons (which is the same thing), we need to listen to the concerns of people like Senator Cotton and we need to consider the clear-eyed and honest observations of thinkers like Daniel Greenfield.  I hope for the sake of our future and that of our children we will brace ourselves and face the facts. It is long past time for political correctness or sensitivity now. We are reaching the point where our existence is on the line.

We give a lot of lip service to “free speech” but when honest questions are raised that make us uneasy we try to shut them up.  If we can’t shut them up we smear them as “conspiracy theorists” or if that fails, we wail, “racist!”. We need to have pure freedom of speech - this is an absolute.  There is no such thing as degrees of freedom of speech. We might have specific exceptions - incitement of mobs to riot, perhaps, stampeding people in a crowd with the cry of “fire!” - but this is not speech containing ideas.  Ideas should be freely expressed. We need to consider them and debate them, not shut them down.

I hope Cotton will continue to speak up and I hope we will investigate his concerns.  They are honest and legitimate concerns. I hope we will take another look, as Greenfield has, at how totalitarian dictators use human beings.  We must make value decisions. Is the life of an innocent child worth protecting? Even if it’s your child and not someone else’s? Because we can do nothing about how the people of Turkey and the Middle East treat their children at this point.  But do we want to succumb to their aggression and in so doing put our own children in the same position? At some point we need to draw the line and then we must defend it regardless of how shameless and barbaric the aggressor.
