SALLY MORRIS: ELLIE GOULDING’S MILITANT “PHILANTHROPY”
I don’t know what it is about the “woke” folks. They are not content to advocate for their own point of view but they are militant when it comes to anyone, anywhere, ever, having a different view. That’s simply not allowed and must be attacked.
This week British pop singer Ellie Goulding announced that she was going to back out of an engagement to perform at a half-time show at the Dallas Cowboys Thanksgiving Day game. The reason for her threat of cancellation was that the half-time show was to be a “Red Kettle Kick-off” for the Salvation Army. Apparently she had no idea that the Salvation Army, like other Christian organizations and denominations, does not believe in same sex marriage and does not condone homosexual relationships. She had already promoted the event herself by posing in a hairnet as if she were going to actually help out at a charity kitchen. Immediately her LGBTQ fans called her out for her participation in such a disgraceful event.
She responded with her knee-jerk threat to cancel unless the Salvation Army came to heel instantly and abandon their beliefs in order to accommodate her and the LGBTQ fans. She demanded that they make a pledge or donation to that community. As a matter of fact, the Salvation Army makes copious contributions to individual members of that community any time they ask for or need help, whether it be food, help with addictions, shelter, relief in times of disaster or just their willingness to listen and be there for them. I doubt Goulding could say the same.
The Salvation Army responded with a statement of their long-standing commitment to help people of all walks of life, regardless of their orientation or their past. They are known for their programs to help people recover from addictions, for their non-discrimination in times of disasters, their conscientious conduct with their thrift shops – donated clothes never go to a landfill; if they are not sold they are recycled. They provide gifts for the children of the poor at Christmas, emergency relief in times of need, a hand up to anyone who comes to their door seeking a second chance at life. Yes, they are a Christian sect, yes, they believe marriage is between one man and one woman, as do many other denominations. But they are not allowed this by the likes of Ellie Goulding, whose philanthropic credentials she proudly touts of performing occasionally at one or another charity event (or posing in an apron and hairnet for Instagram).
We are all allowed to advocate for LGBTQ or just about any other “woke" cause, but it appears we are not allowed to advocate for a tolerant charitable organization dedicated to helping the poor, the addicted, the infirm, the disaster-stricken and everyone else because they adhere to their Christian beliefs. These beliefs are not allowed in our world any longer. The Salvation Army responded to Goulding’s “demand” with a restatement of their mission: “With an organization of our size and history, myths can perpetuate,” David Hudson, National Commander of the Salvation Army, said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News. “An individual’s sexual or gender identity, religion, or lifestyle has no bearing on our willingness to provide service. We stand firmly behind our mission to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.”
Throughout their history the Salvation has never failed to come through for anyone regardless of their need or their background or chosen lifestyle. Ellie Goulding, on the other hand, pats herself on the head for taking part in charity events. Performers benefit hugely from these events – Live Aid did wonders for Queen. She passed up a chance here to show her true commitment to charitable efforts by standing up to these little LGBTQ Nazis. She didn’t. She caved to them. And what did the LGBetc, crowd gain here? I would imagine this kind of stunt by them will be a nail in the coffin of Pete Buttigieg’s campaign – after all, who wants a more militant LGBTQ Gestopo squad running the world?
We have become conditioned to be told we are not allowed our own beliefs if they conflict in any way with the Chosen. Ellie Goulding seems to be one more little private in the army, doing her little bit to squash our freedom to live as we believe. In this case, the Salvation Army believes in traditional marriage and families. They have always acted without discrimination towards those who believe differently from themselves, something maybe Goulding and her higher-ups in the politically correct army could learn from.
What was gained by this tempest in a teapot? Do the LGBTQ people gain anything they didn’t already have? Does Ellie? It’s like the Christian bakers – who gained anything from running them out of business? So there is one less bakery. Who won that one? It’s more about punishing someone who is not in lockstep with them than it is in achieving anything positive. Perhaps the backlash will be the positive result. I hope so.
Meanwhile, things are papered over with Goulding. She’s back on the half-time program. For now, anyway, until she gets further orders from her LGBTQ superiors. If she gets orders to drop out again, let her. She is far more easily replaced than the Salvation Army.
