SALLY MORRIS: FASCISM ON DISPLAY
Hong Kong is a long way away. Most of us have never been there. My uncle went there once or twice and told me how beautiful it was and how vibrant, how exciting the city was. That was when it was still under British protection and had developed a supercharged economy. Its people were free then. Hong Kong had become an economic giant and world center of trade and finance. That was then.
In 1997, as promised, the British turned Hong Kong over to the People's Republic of China. Since then it has existed as a "Special Administration Region". The people of Hong Kong have not been subject to the usual harsh conditions of the people of mainland China but the Chinese government is increasingly impatient to crush the city and subject its people to the same miserable existence as the rest of China. The freedom which Hong Kong has enjoyed is now existentially threatened by a tyranical Communist oppressor.
The present crisis was precipitated by the demand of China that Hong Kong extradite people to the mainland for "trial" and their disposition. The people in Hong Kong say a resounding no to that and have taken to the streets to defend their way of life and their relative independence. It can be noted that about 20% of the people follow the three traditional Chinese religions, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, 12% are Christian and 4% Muslim. The remainder are believers in Judaism and other faiths. The protestors have continued to remain peaceful, they have displayed American flags and sung Christian hymns. Intense pressure has been put upon them to back off but thus far they have simply refused and given no ground.
The video here puts it in stark relief. The ugly face of fascism is here for all to see. We saw the brutality of China in 1989 in Tienanmen Square, where courageous students struck for freedom. They were mowed down by tanks. We hear very little now from the mainland Chinese. They have their social credit scores to worry about now. And that is no joke. If they say anything out of line, if they socialize with the wrong people, if someone accuses them of anything, or if their conduct is anything but robotically compliant with government dictates, they find they cannot travel, they cannot buy groceries or even have or get a job or go to school. This is a picture of Hell. It is something to think about when we see dissenting writers or commentators in the West de-platformed or censored or worse, arrested like Tommy Robinson, for expressing or holding an independent opinion.
When someone tells you that our border is like Auschwitz or that those who would limit immigration are "fascists", tell them to look at this. Here we see fascism on display. We are meant to. China is not hiding its brutality - it is advertising it. That is how bullies stay in charge - through abject fear. The people of Hong Kong find they have more to fear than beatings and tear gas. The realize that if they back down they will go into a long dark night of slavery; they, like their mainland cousins, will be nothing more than human organ farms and factory and field drones and their children will never know freedom. As the rest of the world must watch and wait, Hong Kong stands up valiantly for its freedom. It might help if the president were to censure General Secretary Xi and let him know that America looks down on this kind of thing, but that might be too much to hope - after all he "gets along great" with Xi.
