SALLY MORRIS: HERE’S TO ANOTHER TRIP AROUND THE SUN!
Well, this is the end!
(Actually it’ll begin all over again at midnight, so don’t worry.)
Because it’s not only the end of the year but the end of a decade - a rowdy, tumultuous, surprising, maybe even shocking, decade, I thought we all needed something special.. So in order to see it off in style, I decided to go back in time a bit - to 1957.
In fact, New Year’s is really two events - New Year’s Eve, that glittering-ball-dropping-in-Times-Square-pop-the-cork-champagne-noise-maker-confetti-and-streamers event that reaches its climactic finish at the stroke of midnight, and that dressy, elegant, laid-back, sparkling-chandelier, schmaltzy-waltzy New Year’s Day concert!
I have both for you this weekend - but you might want to save them in case the weather is bad on New Year’s and you decide to stay home by the fire with your champagne and cheese and crackers. Gee, come to think of it, that sounds really nice!
So, for New Year’s Eve, time this to end at midnight - I present . . . wait for it . . . none other than Guy Lombardo from the Roosevelt Hotel Grill Room in New York! Start playing it at just about 11:15 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, full-screen it and the big ol’ ball should come down in the Times Square of 1957/58 at about midnight! Here it is:

Then enjoy a leisurely brunch, dress up and get ready to join Andre Rieu in Vienna for my very favorite of his concerts - 100 Years of Strauss, with his world-famous Johann Strauss Orchestra. There are pleasant side features of a spring in Vienna and lots and lots of great music you can’t get enough of. Here is New Year’s Day especially for you:

You might need another bottle of champagne. And a slice of Sacher Torte (and have some whipped cream ready).
If you are looking for a great movie especially made for New Year’s Eve you can do no better than The Hudsucker Proxy! I can’t recommend this highly enough. If you missed it before, don’t miss it this year! Complete with a gorgeous score based on Khachaturian, it’s got to be one of the best movies the Cohen Brothers have ever made. A phenomenal cast, a fun plot, it all works. And it’s just right for this year’s New Year’s Eve movie night. Popcorn optional.
Happy New Year! May it be all you want it to be!
