SALLY MORRIS:  IT’S NOT OK TO BE WHITE

It’s not OK to be white. That’s the determination of the president of Oklahoma City University. Last month a law student at Oklahoma City University Law School, a “Christian” college operated by a Methodist group, was expelled. His crime was that on Halloween he posted some heinous fliers on campus. They were full of hate and dangerous ideas. They struck fear into the heart of at least one other student, José Cruz.

“IT’S OK TO BE WHITE”. This frightening message was emblazoned on a piece of white paper, posted right there, on the campus. To be fair, the student, whose name has not been published, had already been suspended for a prankish message he had earlier posted to Tinder, wherein he specified the kind of girl he would be interested in dating. It was not a threatening or otherwise “scary” post, but it seemed to have hurt some feelings somewhere. God forbid. Another, hurting, student reported this to school authorities. For the rest of the semester the prankster waited for the other shoe to drop. At long last, after finals, he received word that he had been suspended. He was not to go near the campus. But on Halloween, in costume and makeup, he and friends did visit the campus. It was then that he committed the crime of posting the terrifying poster proclaiming the vile thought that it was “OK to be white”.

The FBI paid him a call and advised him that although he had committed no crime they needed to talk with him to find out what his mindset was – as in, was he planning to shoot someone or plant a bomb, etc. The agent left him with a friendly warning that he should stay away from the campus because he could be charged with trespass. Then he received a letter assuming his "guilt"  (without proof) and that as a consequence he was expelled. He had completed one year of law school. Perhaps he can go to some other school. Perhaps not. Here is the text of a letter the dean offered by way of apology to the whole world for this hateful student . . . who said that it was “OK” to be white!

Dear Students,

This morning, our administrative team was alerted to the presence of fliers around the law school campus. I want to thank every student, staff, and faculty member who took the time to remove them and bring them to our attention. We are currently in the process of investigating this matter and hope to have this resolved quickly.

In the meantime, I want to address the message that was posted. As you may have noticed, OCU Law has been intentional and relentless in celebrating the voices, achievements, and culture of our diverse community. We enjoyed celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQ+ History Month, Dia de los Muertos, and are excited to kick off Native American Heritage Month. (Emphasis mine.)  And we will continue to celebrate our diverse community throughout the year.

Despite what the intentions of that message may have been, the message reminds me of one fact that I know our community embraces – it’s okay to be EVERYBODY. Exclusion and hate will not be tolerated here. You are accepted at OCU Law no matter how you pray, what you look like, or who you love. And you always will be.

Sincerely,

Jim Roth | Dean

Obviously it is completely “OK” to be anything but white. Which means it isn’t OK to be white. It kind of leaves one wondering what we are supposed to tell white kids. It’s not as though they could do anything about it. I suppose they could self-harm. Maybe that is what these college presidents and deans want.

The pained student who turned him in for this crime, José Cruz, was voluble. Actually he wasn’t even a student - he was a former student. Someone just told him about it. He was just so concerned for the students that he was willing to time-travel back to his alma mater just to report this. The tattle-tale must be a piece of work as well. It seems he didn’t have a lot to do. But he did get this done. It hurts because Oklahoma City has had prior history of white nationalism, and the dangers of it. We sit two blocks south of the Memorial,” OCU Law grad Jose Cruz told News free 4. “So, I don`t think, we talk about the Oklahoma standard. There`s no space for that here. It`s unfortunate that people think they have to express themselves this way,” Cruz said. “I really wish people wouldn`t resort to this kind of messaging, because it`s not really a manner of dialog, it`s just trolling.” Presumably Cruz was referring to nut-job Timothy McVeigh, who blew up the Murrah Building about a quarter of a century ago, and had absolutely nothing to do with OCU.

So we have been assured that if you are Muslim, Hispanic, Indian, LGBTQ or just about anything else, you are warmly welcomed at Oklahoma City University. But if you are white . . . maybe not so much.

OCU is not alone, of course. Western Connecticut State College has also been hit! “It’s OK to be white” fliers have been detected on their campus as well! The president of WCSC was right on the ball with his response too. He issued this advisory: Have no doubt that we are treating this as an attack on our university community and making every effort to see that those responsible are caught and properly punished. I am fully committed to the absolutely necessary goal this does not happen again. We must be ever vigilant to protect our university against these hateful attacks.”  Hateful attacks.

Presumably someone is going to be expelled at Western Connecticut too. We know that free speech has been expelled at any rate. If someone objected to a flier that proclaimed, “It’s OK to be Indian” or “It’s OK to be Muslim”, that student would himself be expelled for hate speech.

The Edina Public Schools have instituted a “hate whites” policy against their youngest students, labeling them “racist” and teaching them – teaching them – that their flaw was irremediable, that they were irredeemable. This is pure evil, and the result is likely to be a whole generation of Edina kids marred by this absurd theory. What is a little boy or girl supposed to do when told by a teacher he or she is supposed to trust to tell the truth, when that teacher tells them that they are guilty of racism. If they are already guilty of it they will act it out, presumably. We should expect that. Or probably hang their heads forever and feel themselves second-class citizens.  But what is wrong with us that we permit this? We would never allow this to be said of some other ethnic group. And it is always “OK” to be something other than “white”.  Treating kids this way is like beating a Cocker Spaniel for not being a Boston Terrier.  It is mindless cruelty.

This is a real sickness in our society and if we don’t cure this sickness it will cause some serious harm. In the meantime, we are not only punishing innocent people for innocent thoughts but we are destroying our very freedom to think and to express ourselves. For the longer we deny freedom of expression, the less able people will be to think independently – or think at all. This is a very dangerous road to take.

If there were any place where people should feel free in self-expression it should be in college. In law school. In a Christian college. In America. If we banish freedom there we are in a lot of trouble. These college presidents/deans/whatevers need to be fired. They are traitors. They are doing a grave disservice to their students.  Our Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and assembly – and press - so if someone wants to post a flier that says, “It’s OK to be Martian” or anything else, that flier needs to stay up and that student’s right to say so needs to be protected – by the college president himself. And these weak, flabby, frightened, timid little hall monitors who are reporting these infractions need to be expelled simply for being too immature and for holding up the class.

It is both sick and dangerous to tell people it’s not “OK” to be whatever race they were born. Any fool knows this. But we apparently put only very special fools in charge of our education.
