SALLY MORRIS: MOVE OVER DETROIT
Did you think Minneapolis had a bad week last week? Do you think that burned out husks of buildings and broken glass give the city a sparkling, upbeat atmosphere? Do you think the whole thing is likely to make summer a pleasant experience in the Twin Cities? Wish you owned property there, maybe? Well, things are about to take a turn for the worse if Councilman Jeremiah Ellison and Council President Lisa Bender get their way. Ellison has declared that the Minneapolis PD will be “dismantled”. Bender has jumped up and got on the bandwagon. They propose some sort of “alternate” method of keeping the peace in the city. One suggestion is social workers. (I didn’t make that up.) At any rate, Ellison officially has no problem with Antifa. He is quoted as saying, “I hereby, officially, declare my support for Antifa. Unless someone can prove to me ANTIFA is behind the burning of black and immigrant-owned businesses in my ward, I’ll keep focusing on stopping the white power terrorist THE ARE ACTUALLY ATTACKING US!" [sic] One can only imagine what life will be like in the future Minneapolis. There would be a lot of changes. Although insurance does not usually cover the damage from riots as such, even expected rise in crimes like arson, vandalism, theft, etc., taken on a one-off, everyday basis, the rates of insurance will soar, if, indeed, property can be insured where there is no police force in an urban area. Most of us are aware that rural properties must pay more in order to have the services of a fire department. If there are no police we should expect the fire hazards to increase and the safety of firemen who respond to decrease. Perhaps similarly affected will be other kinds of first-responders like medical emergency personnel. This is likely all illegal. It would undoubtedly break a public service workers contract. But who’s to say that the law still matters in Minneapolis? After all, didn’t the mayor of that great city just order police to stand down and handed the 3rd precinct police headquarters building over to terrorists to burn to the ground? Was that “legal”? Not sure. This is Minneapolis. Maybe some stray sane person will challenge this proposal yet. I guess we’ll see. It sure is easier to just whisk out a wand and disappear the police department than it would be to do the hard, responsible work of cleaning it up and making it function. There is a lengthening history of police abuse in Minneapolis. Some of the early ripples of this were seen in the handling of the Philando Castile case - the immigrant African man who was shot without reason or warning when he was pulled over by police. A jury let the cop off for that one. The Justine Damond case followed that one - she was shot as she approached the police car in her nightclothes to explain her 911 call. Worst decision of her life. I’ve seen police departments crumble before - usually under Democrat and leftist city governments. Memphis, TN, is a place where you might think twice before calling the police. Maybe the days of civilians relying on responsible and upstanding public servants in the police department are over - maybe we must return to the frontier days. The most dangerous thing a person can do is misread the circumstances and depend on something that is not there. Maybe it is better if the police are corrupt, poorly trained, incompetent - as were the four on duty who killed George Floyd last week - that we don’t rely on them. If Minneapolis disbands the force and sells off the cars and real estate, and people arm themselves, the safety factor might go way up. Time will tell - but people will have to understand they are on their own. Would you want to call 911 and have a social worker sent to your emergency? Me either. Will a force of social workers be a good substitute? Maybe we will see in Minneapolis. One thing is certain. The demand for personal firearms will climb. The combination of COVID shutdowns and the recent riots have combined with other elements to increase gun sales by 80.2% over this time last year. Obviously, with 911 shut down people will need to protect themselves from breaking and entering, robbery, theft, kidnapping, mayhem, arson, vandalism, rape and murder with their own means. If I had money to invest I would invest in a shooting range, a gun dealership, self-defense schools and training in the Twin Cities area. The Cities will become a powerful magnet for criminals, drug dealers, human traffickers, terrorists, as well as the white-collar crimes - counterfeiting, embezzling, theft of intellectual property and other more mundane activities. Who would come with an arrest warrant? Sandy the Social Worker? Minneapolis asked for this. How? Well, they elected Ellison and Bender and that most ineffectual of humanoids, Jacob Frey, their mayor. They and Tim Walz, the governor, make a committee of idiots which will all but ensure that Minneapolis will be transformed ere long into a rotting, smoking, reeking hulk. Move over, Detroit.
