SALLY MORRIS:  OUR FUTURE FOR THEIR PRESENT

Again and again our politicians - at every level - are shown to be willing to sell OUR future for THEIR present benefit.  One area where this is apparent is in the mindless push for so-called “clean” energy.  Of course we all want optimal energy that is efficient, reliable and affordable.  It is essential for our future, and nowhere more so than in Minnesota.

Yet, ill-advised and ill-motivated leaders in the Minnesota government, led by Governor Walz, are making an all-out effort to shove through a draconian energy bill - the “Zero Carbon Electricity” bill which calls for zero carbon by the year 2040 - less than seventeen years away.  This bill, if enacted into law, will doom MInnesota businesses and factories, farms and other industries and impoverish our homeowners.  Homeowners can expect astronomical increases in their cost of heat and electricity accompanied by blackouts which could last for days.

Before we leap into this abyss we should at least weigh the consequences.  How many of you can survive for days without electricity?  Don’t count on being able to run your little personal generators either.  They produce carbon.  You will be left without any resources should this happen.

Think of everything you consume and everything you do, whether work or recreation.  Movies?  Healthcare?  The place you work?  Mundane things like doing your laundry?  What of this do you think you can do without for days?  How much more do you want to pay for so much less?

Make no mistake - this bill will constitute widespread endangerment of life itself.  Walz calls for a future in which we rely on 65% wind energy and 11% sun.  Yesterday in East Grand Forks it was well below zero degrees and all of the flags were hanging limp on the posts.  Many days we have cold weather and no sun.  Minnesota’s business, its manufacturers, its services, cannot run without reliable electricity.  Our homes and our health and lives are at extreme risk without reliable energy and heat.  Pragmatically speaking, what will our property values be when we have no energy to heat them?  This kind of legislation, if followed, could cause a massive outmigration of people from Minnesota and a consequent loss of values.  Just watch the U-Hauls leaving the state if this goes through.  You’ll want to be among the first because values will continue to drop at ever-faster rates.

MInnesota is undeniably a state with abundant natural beauty.  It is incumbent upon us to be good stewards of our resources and our environment here.  The answer is to provide the cleanest energy we can without destroying our economy and the well-being of our people.  It will not be in anyone’s interest to turn Minnesota into a tundra, hostile to human life and endeavor.

Lignite is safe and it is clean.  It is reliable.  Our nuclear plants can be used safely.  Gas is available and safe.  The challenge is to provide affordable energy and a safe environment - not to set idiotic and unreachable goals.  These are the province of “experts” like Leonardo di Caprio, Greta Thunberg, Al Gore and John Kerry and other celebrities who do not intend for one minute to live by the rules they send down for the rest of us.  It doesn’t work that way.  If we want a decent quality of life and a future for our children we must tell our legislators in no uncertain terms that they must VOTE NO on this energy bill.
