SALLY MORRIS:  THE TRUE NORTH?

Our neighbors to the north are in the midst of their political leadership campaign.  Will Justin Trudeau be re-elected? Will it be Andrew Scheer? Will independent PPC candidate Maxime Bernier have an impact?

To put these things in simplest form, Justin Trudeau is a reckless, foolish but very dangerous socialist with absolutely no interest in the people of Canada or the Canadian economy.  He has blatantly and literally bought the press by offering taxpayers’ money to reporters and news agencies which promise not to criticize his government. How rotten is that? He reportedly offered conservative and independent Rebel Media money which was refused.  Rebel Media is consistently barred from press events of the Trudeau government. However, it has preserved its standing to expose many of the government’s glaring scandals.

Andrew Scheer is the leader of the Conservative Party.  He has gone way beyond the half-way point in meeting Trudeau.  He has no principles whatsoever. His latest move has been to endorse - as he has repeatedly endorsed the NDP’s policies - Trudeau’s decision that 350,000 migrants will be invited into Canada every year.  This is over one million in three years. Canada’s population is not that large. Canada cannot absorb this level of immigration.  And it is especially damaging when that immigration is intended to be from a hostile culture - the Muslim world. This isn't all. Scheer is also pulling the rug out from under the power industry in Canada.  He prefers, as does Trudeau, to buy oil from the Middle East, thus undermining Canada’s independence and economy.

So who is Maxime Bernier?  He is from Quebec, so there’s that.  But the important thing is his platform.  He left the Conservative Party to lead the People’s Party of Canada (PPC).  His stated goals are to balance the budget, cut immigration and prioritize skilled immigrants, protect Canada’s borders, prioritize refugees who are persecuted minorities, encourage economic growth and pipelines, de-emphasize the madness surrounding alleged “global climate change”, stand up for Canadian veterans, protect freedom of expression and the right to possess arms, emphasize Canadian culture and values and in general, manage Canada better.  Canada deserves better management. Both the Left and the Fake Right have caused the country great harm.

Ezra Levant, a staunch conservative and defender of Canada’s economy and people says he “likes” Bernier.  So do most of his listeners. But he declines to endorse him, believing that Scheer has a better chance to beat Trudeau.  (Where have we heard this argument before?) I would say to Levant, use your considerable influence to sway voters away from Scheer and toward Bernier.  In the end it will not matter whether Trudeau or Scheer is the next name at the top of the list of leaders. Because it is not the party or the name of the leader who will impact Canada.  It is the policies which that person will impose. Bernier’s policies are economically and morally and politically healthy ones for Canada. The other two are like Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee.  It is impossible to see any difference beyond the little initials which follow their names or the column in which their names appear. I hope Levant will pause and take another look. Today he was in court fighting for admittance to a press conference of Trudeau’s.  The other day his reporter, David Menzies, was not only thrown out of a Scheer press event but arrested and handcuffed.  His crime?  He was there - by invitation, mind you - and his intention was to ask where Scheer stood on free speech.  Well, that sounds dangerous. So where, exactly, is the fine line between these two candidates? I would say it is so fine as to be invisible.  The only conservative in this race is Maxime Bernier.

This is one of those times when there is literally nothing to lose by supporting a principled candidate.  The conservatives in Canada have a choice - either one of the Trudeau/Scheer axis or Bernier. We should all hope for their sake they choose to support Bernier.  Even if he does not win a majority, even if he causes Scheer to lose, Canada will have gained by a good turnout for Bernier. It might bring about much needed reform in the Conservative Party.  If not, it might gain ground next time out and render that party irrelevant. Let’s hope for a strong showing for the PPC.
