SALLY MORRIS: WHAT KIND OF LAW CAN WE PROPOSE FOR THIS?
It could happen anywhere. A young boy was transferred to a new school. He met and befriended a girl and was challenged to a fight. Instead of a fight this turned out to be a murder. Numerous kids were involved, some filming the whole episode. They were criticized for not intervening. It is not likely that many unarmed adults would have intervened in a stabbing. THe criticisms ring a bit hollow on that one. However, someone WITH A GUN should have been summoned. It's too bad no bystander happened to have been armed to stop this brutal attack on a young teenage boy. The victim was only 16 years old.
The video is not complete. The news anchor did not see fit to show the public what actually happened. Suffice it to say this was a horrible scene. My point in sharing this is that people commit murders. Weapons do not murder people. Until we can figure out a way to outlaw the personalities and attitudes which result in murder outlawing any particular weapon will be useless. In fact the opposite is true. If we outlaw means of self protection against such assault we will have more, not fewer murders. London's mayor has outlawed knives - and screwdrivers, awls and various other kitchen and workshop tools. To no avail. The London murder rate has surpassed New York's. If there were more guns instead of fewer among the general population this teenage boy might still be alive and well. Someone might have stopped this by just firing into the air or winging one of the assailants. Instead, the attack went on until it ended with one dead and others injured. Although the people making the video of this were criticized it is good there is a video record. It will help bring the perpetrators to justice we hope. Here is the link, courtesy of The Blaze.
