SALLY MORRRIS:  AN OFFER HE CAN’T REFUSE

The Commission on Presidential Debates (whoever they are) dictated that the next Trump-Biden bout would be “virtual”.  This kind of scheme would have provided no security that Biden would not have a LOT of help on his side.  Biden was okay with this; Trump was not.  Trump wisely said “no” to this nutso idea.  The excuse was COVID, of course, despite the fact that Trump is already over it and by the debate date would have been non-contagious.  In other words, a very, very thin excuse.  In view of Trump’s decision, the Commission (whoever they are) decided to just cancel it altogether.  So there.

Now, from the hinterlands, far, far away from the Commission (whoever they are) comes a refreshing idea, totally American in concept and it should be so obvious that everyone should have come up with it.  Why doesn’t Trump simply invite Biden to a debate outside of the Commission’s (whoever they are) oversight, and depend upon themselves.  After all, they both say they want to be the President of the United States, so it should be soluble, even without the Commission (whoever they are).

Why doesn’t Trump invite Biden and his campaign to decide upon their moderator, and Trump and his campaign come up with someone they trust and set it up where each moderator asks a question in turn and each debater has equal time to answer the question.  No holds barred.  This could be at some location agreeable to both.  Perhaps some odd place like Faneuil Hall in Boston or Independence Hall in Philadelphia.  They could each have an equal number of tickets and everyone could be spaced six feet apart.  It could go for 90 to 120 minutes, as long as it takes for each side to have an equal number of probing questions.  Now - who could object to this?  There could be riot police to keep the peace in whatever city they choose.  In all of the United States there must be some ground “neutral” enough for everyone to put their views before the American people.

Not having another debate is not acceptable.  America is at a crossroads in our history.  We will be deciding in a momentous election - nothing less than socialism and the road to communism and serfdom vs. a future built upon our Constitution and the principles of the Declaration of Independence.  Come to think of it, I kind of like Independence Hall for this.

I hope someone in Washington will reach out to Trump with this idea and that no time is lost in extending the invitation.  Biden might well reject it.  Let that be on him.  If he dares not debate under such equitable circumstances he is as much as admitting he has no right to ask people to vote for him for president.  After all, what would be more fun than a truly open, rousing debate followed by pizza for everyone?  Anyone who could say no to this has no soul.
