Another Saint Patrick’s Day has come and gone and with it the frills and falderal of superficiality. However, for descendants of the Irish who know their history, Saint Patrick’s Day becomes a significant commemoration. Looking past the silly tales of leprechauns, shamrocks, and green beer exists the account of a people’s struggle and triumph. The Irish offer a superb example of how a persecuted people with a fighting spirit can succeed against all odds enduring centuries of mistreatment. Irishmen can thank their patron saint not so much for driving snakes off the island but for sustaining their faith through centuries of hardship.
