How did the health-care debate decay to the point where we think it entirely natural for the central government to fix a collective figure for what 300 million freeborn citizens ought to be spending on something as basic to individual liberty as their own bodies?

Freedom is messy. In free societies, people will fall through the cracks – drink too much, eat too much, buy unaffordable homes, fail to make prudent provision for health care and much else. But the price of being relieved of all those tiresome choices by a benign paternal government is far too high.

The Federal Reserve System is fraudulent. Whatever its stated purpose, its effective purpose is to create a mechanism of deficit spending by politicians, through the insidious invisible taxation of monetary debasement (aka inflation). With printed money, the Government can buy services for its voters before the effects of inflation are felt. It is then the voters whose money buys less the following year, as the new money has raised prices, and they are none the wiser.

Obama is now mandating that The Fed is to have more oversight, more authority and control over the markets of the United States. If we can learn anything from The Fed, it’s that the best way to succeed as a politician is to stretch one’s failure over a long enough period that people won’t remember it.

But Walter Cronkite, as a journalist, never appeared concerned with truth.  Almost all of Washington knew that Kennedy was unfaithful, everyone knew his father was a crooked anti-Semite, and the rumors of Kennedy deals with the mob and the corrupt machines of Daley and West Virginia was notorious – notorious, and almost ignored by the anchor of CBS Evening News.  Perhaps that was a better America, in which every personal scandal was not dredged through the tedious news cycle.  But much of America looked to Cronkite to be our guardian of truth, and he was most certainly not.

I don’t buy the argument that the government can add 40 million uninsured people to the health care system, cut the total cost and not go into debt. A growing nameless, faceless bureaucracy representing Treasury (IRS), Health and Human Services and other federal agencies will set the guidelines for care rendered in doctor-patient decisions.

The Left has long confused work, jobs, and worth.  The Stimulus Package, the grand catastrophe, was intended to create and preserve jobs which could make America poorer, not richer.

It is hard to say whether the Left has simple contempt for productive genius or simply fear of it, but it is very easy to see that creating nominal “jobs” with no purpose seems noble and logical to those who have never really created a good or a service in their lives.
