CHUCK ROGÉR: BIG GOVERNMENT NANNIES THIS WAY COMETH

A recent post on NBC's Philadelphia area website documents a proposed Upper Moreland Township law that would make it illegal to leave a car unlocked in public. Why? Because Northeastern big government liberals are looking out for the people. About three-quarters of thefts of items from cars in the area are committed on unlocked vehicles. Police "would do spot checks on cars in neighborhoods having problems with thefts from cars."

Let's add the Philly car nanny insanity to Madison, Wisconsin bicycle nanny insanity.

Back in 2009, Madison set the bar for how government must watch out for people. A city alderman pushed an ordinance to "protect" bikers and pedestrians from "carelessly opened car doors." This would stop bikers from slamming into doors just about the same way that laws against robbery "protect" people from scumbag robbers and laws against murder make sure that nobody ever gets murdered.

The justification offered for the Madison ordinance was that "insufficient bike lanes and narrow roads" keep bikers from riding far enough from cars to avoid smashing into opened doors. In typical liberal illogic, instead of not putting bike lanes in places where bike lanes don't belong and then holding bikers responsible for not biking in dangerous places, we must punish the poor sap who opens a car door. We must "protect" yet another "oppressed minority," this time, bikers.

It's Liberalism 101: Everyone's responsible for everyone else’s welfare, with government as the enforcer.

To the Philly car-locking and Madison biker-dooring laws we can also add laws against salt, trans-fats, sodas, junk food in schools, as well as forcing us to buy health insurance, forbidding risky investments, and bailing us out of home loans that we hadn't an ice-cube-in-hell's chance of repaying in the first place.

Soon, Washington will control other stuff too, like which household appliances we can and cannot use for our own good and the good of "the environment." Woops, the enlightened Dr. Chu at the Energy Department is already settling that question for us, isn't he?

What we need in order to be totally, completely, ultimately "safe," you know, really "protected," is for government to shut down all those evil "businesses" that are ruining our quality of life.

Give Mr. Obama time. He'll get there.

For government to assume the responsibility to "take care of" citizens by eliminating all possible hazards would actually make people more susceptible to those hazards by conditioning them to be utterly incapable of looking out for themselves.

A people bred and enabled to be perpetual children by a gargantuan nanny state cannot survive, much less thrive, as a viable culture.
