DENNIS PATRICK: ABOLISH ICE? NO DICE!

Time is long overdue to speak in support of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement otherwise known as ICE. These good folks are one of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) law enforcement agencies. Other DHS enforcement agencies include US Customs and Border Protection (CPB), Transportation Security Administration (TSA), US Coast Guard, and US Secret Service.

Perspective helps. The largest federal law enforcement agencies are US CPB (27,705), Federal Bureau of Prisons (15,214), Federal Bureau of Investigation (12,242), and ICE (10,399). There are at least 10 other federal law enforcement agencies that have 1,000 or more personnel. The majority of federal law enforcement agencies fall within the Department of Justice (DOJ) and DHS. A few federal agencies have their own enforcement arms including the US Postal Service, Central Intelligence Agency, and the Department of Interior (National Park Service and the US Fish and Wildlife Service).

Of all the federal law enforcement agencies, ICE headed the news cycle over the past year leading up to the 2018 midterm elections. Border security was a major issue on the minds of voters. Sadly, ICE was the whipping boy of the left. The Passing Scene takes this opportunity to address falsehoods, fibs, and outright lies promulgated by the left.

“ICE…is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into, frankly, is a terrorist organization.” This from former gubernatorial candidate for New York Governor Cynthia Nixon on Fox News, 6/22/18. Fortunately, she lost the New York Democrat primary to Governor Cuomo (himself no lover of ICE) and now aligns herself with the ultra-leftist Working Families Party. Only a fool would ignore the data to call ICE a terrorist organization. Pew Research corroborates the following data. The vast majority of illegal immigrant arrests by ICE are for those with criminal charges and convictions. Gang member arrests in 2017 totaled 4,818 including 796 MS-13 gang members. ICE rescued over 500 victims of human trafficking and 904 exploited children. This doesn’t sound like terrorism.

“The movement to ‘Abolish ICE’ is …going mainstream.” CNN, 7/2/18. More “fake news” from CNN. The Democrat “Abolish ICE” initiative by Party leadership is demonstrably very unpopular. Voters do not want to abolish ICE. Instead, ICE has strong popular support in every demographic group as indicated by a pre-election Harvard/Harris Poll. That is why illegal immigration was such an important election issue.

“Family Separation Is Trump’s Immigration Policy.” NPR, 6/20/18. No, no, no. That was Obama’s policy including kids in cages. What we do know is that 2.3 million illegal adults were apprehended under Obama. A half million of those were referred for prosecution – minus the kids. According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, “the Obama administration…used family separation when they prosecuted immigration offenses….” That was the law under Obama. The law has not been changed or updated and Trump is following the same law. It is not a new policy.

“What a group of incompetents. At this point [ICE is] focused more on toddlers than terrorists….Instead of focusing on stopping bad drugs coming in and stopping dirty drug money from going out, they’re focused on separating kids from their families.” This brilliant observation by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), as reported in Breitbart, 7/1/18.

Here is some of the data published by ICE and CBP Border Security Report for FY 2017. Removals: 226,119 from interior and border. Dangerous individuals prevented entry: 15,907. Apprehensions along the border including expedited removal: 310,531. Illegal drugs seized include 1.59 million lbs. marijuana, 273,580 lbs. cocaine, 66,617 lbs. meth, 5,760 lbs. heroin, 1,485 lbs. fentanyl. Bureau of Prisons reports 38,152 aliens in federal prison for drug trafficking, rape, fraud, among other felonies.

In view of the above data, Senator Durbin is more interested in scoring political points with his base than he is in the safety of the American people. This is his blatantly stupid choice among options.

As the dust settles around the 2018 midterm elections, a nagging question remains. Under the new Congress, will America be any safer with updated immigration laws and enhanced law enforcement? Don’t hold your breath. This is not on the agenda of the cop-hating left.
