Democrats have always leaned left-of-center with a tendency to embrace socialism. Their leaders have often espoused their love of socialism over the years. But candidates who campaigned on socialist issues stood no chance of being elected. America overwhelmingly rejected socialism. The tendency of socialists has been to mask their true beliefs and move their campaigns to the center of the political spectrum.

Times have changed. The leftists in academia have waited a long time to see results of their indoctrination of American youth, and it is finally here. Some polling data demonstrates that as many as 23 percent of young people of high school and college age consider Joseph Stalin a hero. They are deaf to the sirens’ song of “something for nothing.”

Stephen L. Miller, writing for the New York Post states, “Democrats’ days of flirting with the more radical wing of their Party are over. They’re now in a committed relationship with each other; the hammer entwined with the sickle.”

After all, communism and radical socialism are kissing cousins.

A good 760-page book lays out the panoply of socialist failures. “From the Gulag to the Killing Fields: Personal Accounts of Political Violence and Repression in Communist States” edited by Paul Hollander was published in 2006 by ISI Books. A century of experience illustrates the need for force to maintain socialism once imposed. Even by force of arms, socialism cannot be made to work. Illustrations include the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Yugoslavia, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Cuba, Nicaragua, North Korea, Ethiopia, and currently Venezuela.

On 9/27/18 PJ Media reported “Communists Planning Armed Insurrection on Twitter.” The Antifa co-hosts of the podcast The Guillotine identify themselves as Communist and Marxist and appear to be fans of mass-murdering Communist dictators like Mao Zedong and Che Guevera. They suggest to fellow travelers that they organize cells and focus on ambushes and assassinations to bleed “right-leaning forces.” They make no distinction between President Trump, the police, and actual Nazis.

The obvious question remains unanswered by the left. If socialism has not worked for the last century, why do Democrat leaders continue to embrace it? Good question. Crickets.

Consider a few of the many recent news stories. “Membership in the Democratic Socialist of America (DSA), which has been around since 1982, has grown from about 5,000 to 35,000 since November 2016, and dozens of DSA candidates are running for office around the country. In June, one of them, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, upset Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary, knocking off a ten-term incumbent and one of the most powerful Democrats in the House.” – “The Socialist Network,” Washington Monthly, July-August 2018.

“She represents the future of our Party.” – Tom Perez, DNC co-chair, discussing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on “The Bill Press Show,” 7/3/2018.

“The issues she [Ocasio-Cortez] ran on are fantastic issues.” – Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (NY–D), Real Clear Politics, 6/29/18. And what are the issues? Free Medicare and housing for all, guaranteed jobs, free college tuition, cancelling student debt, abolishing ICE, and more. Not surprisingly, she has no plan to pay for it.

“The Socialist Takeover of the Democratic Party Is Proceeding Nicely.” – New York magazine, 2/28/17.

“DSA…ultimately wants to nationalize the entire financial sector.” – Vox 6/27/18.

“Virginia Delegate Lee Carter, a Democrat and member of Metro D.C. DSA, envisions transforming corporations into worker-owned cooperatives.” – Huffington Post, 5/16/18.

“Democrats’ Next Big Thing: Government-Guaranteed Jobs.” – The New York Times, 5//22/18.

“Likely 2020 Democratic Candidates Want to Guarantee a Job to Every American.” NPR, 5/8/18.

“Cory Booker’s New Big Idea: Guaranteeing Jobs for Everyone Who Wants One.” – Vox, on the NJ Senator’s swing into socialism, 4/20/18.

“Medicare for All Is New Democratic Mantra in Congressional Races.” – The Washington Post, 7/9/18.

“Bernie Sanders Calls to Abolish [Entire US] Immigration System, Restructure ICE.” Huffington Post, 7/3/18.

“Yo No Creo En Fronteras.” – “I Do Not Believe in Borders,” T-shirt worn by Rep. Keith Ellison, deputy chairman of the Democratic National Committee, as he walked in a May Day parade in Minneapolis, Breibart, 5/7/18.

“Happy Birthday, Karl Marx. You were Right!” -- New York Times op-ed, 4/30/18.

Democrat leaders who once flirted with socialism are now caving in to the radical left while taking their constituents’ votes for granted. Old line Democrats who oppose the lurch to the left should consider the hand of friendship offered by their Republican neighbors. Dems don’t have to become Republicans. Disaffected Dems can quietly cross the aisle in November to help save the Republic they once knew and loved. Democrats and Republicans served their country together during the Cold War to defeat Communism. They can do so again. Meanwhile, old line Democrats can work to reclaim their party.

Think about it. What do they have to lose?
