SALLY MORRIS:  A MAN IN THE MIRROR

Ted Cruz was booed at the GOP convention tonight.  He was insulted simply because he could not bring himself to endorse a man who had falsely libeled him as a philanderer with FIVE MISTRESSES.  He could not quite handle endorsing the man who accused his innocent father, a survivor of both Batista’s and Castro’s torture, of participating in the assassination of President Kennedy.  He found it too much to ask to endorse the man who said his wife was ugly.  So go ahead.  If you agree with the thugs running the GOP these days, join in.  Boo him.

But there are many of us, not delegates, just ordinary decent citizens of fly-over land, who wholeheartedly agree and understand that Ted Cruz is first and foremost a MAN.  Not a coward, not a whore, like so many of the delegates there – some even from North Dakota.  I would rather boo, if that were the extent of my articulation, those sellouts and phony “conservatives” like our own starlet, Kevin Cramer, who actually DID endorse him.  Those are people whose names we should remember.  Remember them when Trump fails to win because he hasn’t got the true grassroots support he needs, because he has spurned his base.  Remember them when Hillary is sworn in because you allowed this to happen.  Or, remember them if he should by some miracle become president.  Because if he does we will have the opportunity to witness the true depth of his deception, the scope of his incompetence and his nearly demented irresponsibility.

Perhaps the elite entourage and the acres of minions below, booing and caterwauling at Senator Cruz have not been slandered by Mr. Trump.  Maybe their parents have not been declared to be assassins by him.  Maybe they got away without their wives being called ugly.  Maybe.  Maybe they have not been called liars for months without reason.  Maybe they are fine with being humiliated once or twice before breakfast.  The same ugly mass below that was jeering Cruz were all there calling him “Lyin’ Ted” right along with their ring leader.  On the other hand, some of them were okay with being insulted – Carson was apparently down with being labeled a child molester.  Chris Christie was seemingly proud to have been asked to walk ten paces behind and not call the great man “Donald”.  That was their call.  That is why I don’t term them “men”.  That term is reserved for upright, courageous men who defend their parents, their wives, their children.  Not for sycophants who fawn on anything with a checkbook and reality TV celebrity.

Donald Trump was obviously angry.  He had, after all, invited Cruz to speak.  He failed to take proper measure of the man.  He actually thought that Cruz would stand there before the crowd that nominated the man who has called him “Lyin’ Ted” for six months, who slandered him and numerous innocent women, who defamed his father, who deeply insulted his wife – people who had done nothing to him and deserved respect, not insults and accusations of criminal activity – and endorse him!  The incongruity of asking someone whom he has called a liar for months to endorse him never occurred to him, I guess.  One thing this ought to tell us about Trump is that he is detached from reality and is unacquainted with honor and decency.  Why should this person think that a free man, an American citizen would, after this senseless abuse, crawl up there and endorse him?  What would YOU think of anyone who would do that?  We should tremble to think he could ever possibly be at the helm of the ship of state.  His insults to some of this world’s dictators will not be so benignly answered by them as he was by Senator Cruz.   After all, he most civilly and generously congratulated Trump on winning the nomination.   We should hope that while voters take Cruz’s advice to heart and support the conservatives on the down ticket they will refrain from sending Trump to the White House.  There was one man on the GOP stage this year.  Senator Cruz.  He will be booed for not being another minion or a “team player”.  But at least he will look in the mirror and find a man there.
