There is precious little that a minority party in Congress which does not hold the presidency can do about grave national security threats. Republicans are in that situation. So what should they do? It was striking to hear Khadafy and Chavez profess their admiration for Obama, call him “our son”, and declare their fond hope that he remain president for life. The Chinese and Russians are more circumspect in public, and laughing their heads off in private. As for the saner members of the UN, many Europeans still think they’ve got the American president they’ve always wanted: They would agree with John Bolton’s indictment – that this was a post-American speech by a post-American president – but mean it as high praise. As the contours of the post-American world emerge, they will have plenty of time to reconsider their enthusiasm.

While this is shocking, there is an even bigger story here. Consider this: the video’s “views” counter listed only 363 views as of 1:04 p.m. EST on Sept. 24.
But at the same time it had 2,279 comments.

A few years ago, the great scholar Bernard Lewis warned, during the debate on withdrawal from Iraq, that America risked being seen as “harmless as an enemy and treacherous as a friend”. In Moscow and Teheran, on the one hand, and Warsaw and Prague, on the other, they’re drawing their own conclusions.

BRUCE WALKER: OBAMA COULD IMPROVE HEALTH CARE - IF THAT IS WHAT HE REALLY WANTED |
We are, President Obama informs us, in need of health care reform. Congress may be deadlocked on the issue. Obama seems to speak as if congressional inaction on improving healthcare means no federal action on improving healthcare. He needs to read the Constitution and, even more, he needs to review all the powers which Congress and federal courts have given to the Presidency. President Obama could take action to improve our nation’s healthcare system right now.
But that assumes that President Obama actually wants to improve healthcare in America. In fact, all the countless speeches, all the vastly complex congressional bills, all the relentless insistence that America is in crisis, are all intended to accomplish just one thing: Obama was to gain giant chunks of power and authority for the federal government at the expenses of individual Americans. It is not a reform of our healthcare he seeks; it is a reform of the balance between personal liberty and government control.
